SIA Society: Celebrating Nursing Excellence

The newly established SIA Society held their second Induction Ceremony at Brookfield Health Sciences Complex, University College Cork on Monday 22nd of May 2017

The SIA Honor Society of Nursing and Midwifery Ireland, is a prelude Chapter of Sigma Theta Tau International (STTI) Honor Society of Nursing and is the first of its kind in Ireland. STTI is a long established global organisation for nursing and midwifery leaders with members in over 90 countries.

The SIA Honor Society of Nursing and Midwifery Ireland involves collaboration between Schools and Departments of Nursing and/or Midwifery in University College Cork, Waterford Institute of Technology, the Institute of Technology Tralee; as well as the Nursing and Midwifery Planning and Development Unit of the Cork/Kerry region.

Over 54 new members were invited to join the society last Monday, May 22nd, in a well-attended evening of celebration. The society inducted 38 new charter members, the first five charter student members and seven honorary members. There are over 79 members of the SIA Honor Society of Nursing and Midwifery Ireland to date. President of the Society, Dr. Elizabeth Weathers teleconferenced from the RCSI, Bahrain and welcomed everyone to the Ceremony. Dr. Nicola Cornally (Vice President of the SIA Society), spoke of the successes the society has achieved in the past year and exciting plans for the future all centred on the goals and vision of the society, including to unite nurses and midwives working in all settings and nurture a culture of support, comradery and solidarity amongst members of the profession. Dr Suzanne Denieffe and Dr Alice Coffey welcomed all the new members and encouraged them to celebrate their contribution to their profession.

The first free event for members was held on the day and this included two master classes..  The first focused on transitional care and was facilitated by Professor Mary Naylor. Mary Naylor is a Professor at the University of Pennsylvania School of Nursing and has been a member of Sigma Theta Tau International for over twenty years. She is a pioneer in the design, evaluation, and spread of health care innovations that have significantly improved the outcomes of chronically ill older adults and their family caregivers, while reducing health care costs. The second masterclass on leadership/portfolio was delivered by Ms. Teresa Moore who is a Leadership and Innovation Advisor at the National Leadership Innovation Centre for Nursing and Midwifery
