New Interdisciplinary University-wide module launched

A new University-wide interdisciplinary module was successfully launched at the end of January and continues up to Easter recess.

A new University-wide interdisciplinary module "UW0011 Interdisciplinary Perspectives on Social Justice, Equality, Diversity and Health" was successfully launched at the end of January and continues up to Easter recess. The module breaks new ground as it is open to members of the public, staff and students and it can be taken for CPD credits, for 5 ECTS credits, or simply for general interest. With over 40 students attending the first lecture the joint module leaders, lecturers Claire Dorrity (Applied Social Studies) and Dr Angela Flynn (Nursing & Midwifery), are delighted with the level of interest.

UW0011 explores issues relating to social justice, equality, diversity and health from an interdisciplinary perspective. The module invites participants to critically reflect on these issues with an emphasis on activism, agency, empowerment, and advocacy. The module encourages participants to explore the reality of unequal power relationships, discrimination and oppression and the denial of access to opportunities, resources and decision-making processes.

This is an exciting pilot initiative that has resulted in many people, from a hugely diverse range of backgrounds, coming into UCC each Wednesday evening, wanting to think about, and debate, issues of social justice, equality and diversity.
