Inter-disciplinary Learning for Patient Safety.
Students and staff from the School of Nursing and School of Medicine recently participated in an interdisciplinary National Early Warning Score (NEWS) training programme. Over 350 students and 12 facilitators were involved over three days. Students were assigned to mixed groups of eight. Four 3rd year nursing students and four 5th year medical students managed a variety of simulated clinical situations involving deteriorating patients in the excellent clinical skills and simulation facilities available in both schools.
The NEWS is a key aspect of the HSE patient safety agenda. Early recognition and management of deteriorating patients is recognised as an essential element of clinical practice. Nursing and medical professionals work as team members in clinical practice. Training together is therefore a key aspect of professional education as issues with team work communication are widely acknowledged as contributing factors to adverse medical events in deteriorating patients.
For most participants this was the first opportunity to engage in team based training in an inter-disciplinary context.
