On May 16th, a group from COPE, facilitated by Ms. Sile Divane (CNS-Communication) and Ms. Anne-Marie Martin (Lecturer-Intellectual Disability Nursing), visited the CSSRC to learn about how their bodies work as part of a health promotion and healthy living initiative. The group examined anatomical models of digestive and respiratory systems. They learned about the importance of healthy eating for their digestive system and overall well-being. They also learned about the effects of exercise and smoking on the lungs and heart. The session was active and practical as the participants were encouraged to explore the anatomical models and handle the body parts. The group found the session enjoyable and informative. Their curiosity around body functioning was fulfilled through active exploration of the anatomy models. This session was a pilot for an on-going initiative targeting health promotion, healthy living and body awareness among adults with intellectual disability. In addition, it reflects national and international legislation and policy with regards to access and inclusion for people with disabilities
