Students raise funds for Bumbleance, Saoirse Foundation and Liam's Lodge

The students in year 1 Nursing programmes were very moved by a presentation given by Mr Tony Heffernan as part of NU1058 earlier this semester.
(see https://www.saoirsefoundation.com and https://www.liamslodge.com for the work that he does in the name of his late children).

Tony and his wife Mary have recently achieved planning permission to build ‘Liam’s Lodge’ which will cater for the medical, educational and recreational needs of families coping with sick children who suffer from Batten Disease and other rare diseases. Liam’s Lodge will provide a week of much-needed respite for the families, who will also receive additional training in the extra skills required to care for highly dependent children. Some major fundraising will be needed to achieve this outcome.

The First year student reps, the Nursing & Midwifery Society, and Dr Angela Flynn (Director of Undergraduate Education) have been involved in planning a number of fundraising events that will take place into 2018. The first event, a Bake-sale and Calendar sale took place on Wednesday 13th in the atrium of Brookfield Health Sciences Complex. They sold loads of lovely things baked by the students, a cake donated by Hassets, as well as calendars, hats, pens, Bumble Bees and other merchandise. Just under €600 has so far been raised.
