Dr Angela Flynn facilitates workshop for the Irish Human Rights and Equality Commission (IHREC)
Dr Angela Flynn was invited by IHREC to facilitate a workshop on the implementation of the new "Public Sector Duty".
Dr Angela Flynn was invited by IHREC to facilitate a workshop on the implementation of the new "Public Sector Duty".
The Public Sector Duty refers to legislation (Section 42 of the Irish Human Rights and Equality Commission Act 2014) that creates a new obligation on public bodies (including HEIs) to have regard to the need to eliminate discrimination, promote equality of opportunity, and protect human rights, in carrying out their functions. UCC is one of a small number of pilot sites that are working on trialing a process that Irish HEIs can use to roll out the new Public Sector Duty. Angela is a member of UCC's Equality Committee and is on UCC's Public Sector Duty Pilot Working Group.
The purpose of the workshop on November 17th was to create a space for participants to discuss and share ideas in relation to implementing the Public Sector Equality and Human Rights Duty. Participants heard from organisations that had started implementing the Duty, including the steps / activities they have undertaken, challenges and how these challenges have been overcome.
