UCC hosts Second Annual Criminal Law Conference, June 29th
26 Jun 2007
The Centre for Criminal Justice and Human Rights at the Faculty of
Law at UCC hosts its second Annual Criminal Law conference on June
29th. Titled: "Rebalancing Criminal Justice in Ireland - a question of
rights", the aim of the conference is to update delegates in criminal
justice with particular emphasis on the European Convention on Human
Rights (ECHR) and its implications for Irish criminal law.
The
incorporation of the ECHR has added another layer of protection for
those accused of crime, subjecting the exercise of State power to
further controls and limitations. Recent debates on rebalancing the
criminal process, however, threaten to unsettle the delicate
equilibrium between public protection and human rights. This conference
will explore these debates with leading experts in the field.
Speakers at the conference include: Mr Justice Adrian Hardiman, Dr
Gerard Hogan, Professor Caroline Fennell, Donncha O'Connell, James
McGuill, Una Ni Raifteraigh, and Michael Farrell.
The conference takes place on Friday, June 29th in Room G01, Brookfield Health Sciences Complex, UCC.
Enquiries can be directed to Dr Shane Kilcommins or Aimée Mullins at the Faculty of Law, UCC. See http://www.ucc.ie/en/lawsite/eventsandnews/events/ for details.
