2007 Press Releases
Sensor Network Focus at UCC
22 Jun 2007
Ireland's first international event dedicated to wireless sensor
networks will take place at UCC on June 25th and 26th. Organised by
Professor Cormac J. Sreenan of UCC's Department of Computer Science,
together with Professors Phil Levis of Stanford University and Joe
Paradiso of MIT, the 4th International Workshop on Networked Embedded
Sensors will report on many groundbreaking research results on sensor
networks from researchers in Ireland, UK, Continental Europe, US and
Australia.
The workshop includes keynote talks by Professor Ramesh Govindan of the
University of Southern California on "Towards general-purpose sensing
systems" and by Dr Frank Schmidt of EnOcean Inc. on "Radio sensors
powered by ambient energy: from strange ideas to mass market products".
"Computer scientists at UCC have a vision of the future that involves a
fundamental shift in the way we use and perceive computers", said
Professor Sreenan. In this view, small embedded computers will be
integrated into settings such as buildings, roads, rivers, factories
and farms, and significantly enhance applications such as pollution
monitoring, natural disaster management, building control, security,
traffic management and automated agriculture/factories. The core
enabling technology is a miniature computer equipped with wireless
communication and sensors. These computers will be deployed on scales
of hundreds and thousands, forming a sensor network that conveys
information back to the Internet for storage and analysis. This
emerging technology is causing a major buzz in industry and academia,
with researchers enthusiastic to address a host of inter-disciplinary
research challenges, and companies eager to exploit the new markets and
applications that are enabled. In Ireland, agencies such as Enterprise
Ireland and SFI are investing heavily in wireless sensor networks, and
at UCC the Mobile & Internet Systems Laboratory in the Department
of Computer Science has established a high international profile for
its research on software and protocols for sensor networks.
EmNets 2007 has received significant sponsorship from interested
companies, state agencies and institutes, including Intel, Nokia, EPA,
Philips, CIT's TEC Centre, ArchRock, Tyndall National Institute and UCC.
