Finding Focus at UCC Summer Academy

22 Jun 2007

Second level students from all over Ireland will be offered the opportunity of a lifetime at UCC when the Summer Academy kicks off on Monday, June 25th continuing until Friday, June 29th.

The Academy offers transition year and fifth year students the perfect opportunity to experience life as a college student. Not only will students have the chance to take part in academic life on campus but they will also get to enjoy the many social activities that UCC has to offer. To truly experience student life throughout the week, students will be living in University Hall, sharing apartments with fellow students.

As part of the Summer Academy Programme the days will be filled with a mix of academic workshops, practical skills sessions, campus tours as well as social activities each evening.

The diverse range of topics on offer provides students with the opportunity to discover new interests and abilities and perhaps a new and exciting path of study. There will also be interactive workshop sessions in the afternoon specially tailored to specific area of interest where students can meet like-minded students and explore topics in more depth. One of the workshops on offer is 'Broadcast your own Radio Show Live!' in association with Cork Campus Radio where students will create, produce and broadcast their own radio show live to the college campus and surrounding areas.  Students will also get an opportunity to make and edit a film!

Workshop sessions incorporating study skills and career advice will be provided to give students the chance to clarify their goals and decide on what direction to take in the future.

Each evening from 7pm to 10pm there will be various social activities where students will have the time to get to know their fellow students and most importantly have fun.  Students will be taken to Haulbowline Naval Base to see the Corcadorca Production - Woyzeck on Wednesday!

Students will also be introduced to the many Clubs and Societies available in UCC which provide outstanding opportunities for personal development. An afternoon will be spent at the state of the art Mardyke Sports Arena where it is possible to sample such diverse sporting activities as the climbing wall, swimming, 5-a-side football and basketball, indoor hockey and fun in the fitness studio!

The UCC Summer Academy is now an annual event.  For more information log on to http://www.ucc.ie/workingwithschools
