Professor Mícheál Ó Súilleabháin RIP/An tOllamh Micheál Ó Súilleabháin ar shlí na fírinne

It is with great sadness that UCC has learned of the passing of musician, composer, academic and educator, Professor Emeritus Mícheál Ó Súilleabháin, former colleague and friend. During his tenure at UCC, 1975 – 1993, he was responsible for developing the study of Irish Traditional Music and taking it to a whole new level.  He raised its profile and status, not only within the university, but also on a national and international stage. His sensitive and innovative approach made it accessible to all, while at the same time he was instrumental in gathering the music at its source and in the setting up of numerous archives.

He was a remarkable advocate through both music and words for the power and place of art in Irish society and a leading voice in the academic sector. His immense contribution to UCC and to the wider world of Irish Traditional Music will always be part of his rich legacy. He will be greatly missed by all his friends and former colleagues at UCC.

We extend our deepest sympathy and condolences to all his family.

Scoláire mór agus cumadóir inspioráideach ab ea an tOllamh Mícheál Ó Súilleabháin a chuaigh go mór i bhfeidhm ar an bpobal mór agus ar scoláirí agus ar shainspeisialtóirí ceoil ar fuaid an domhain mhóir go léir. Fágann an éacht a dhein sé ar son an cheoil Ghaelaigh i gcaitheamh a shaoil go mbeidh an saol Fódhlach fé chomaoin aige go brách. Deinimid comhbhrón ó chroí lena chlann agus lena mhuintir. Leabaidh i measc na Naomh go raibh aige agus ceol síoraí na bhFlaitheas.

Ar dheis Dé go raibh a anam.
