AP5808: Relationships within Work Organisations

Module Objective: To provide participants with a theoretical and practical knowledge of types of organisations, the development of organisational cultures and the management of relationships within the workplace.
Module Content: Types of organisations; organisational cultures; power within organisations; change theories; the process of change; resistance to change; organisational conflict; methods of conflict resolution; the art of negotiation; types of management; staff relationships.
Learning Outcome: On successful completion of this module, students should be able to:
  • Identify the organisational type, the work culture and the power dynamics of a given organisation.
  • Identify the different types of challenging behaviour which may be encountered in organisations.
  • Apply organisatinoal concepts in analysing real life situations.
  • Integrate the concepts studied in suggesting approaches to solving organisational problems.
  • Develop assertiveness and decision making skills so that participants communicate in a direct, clear and effective way.
  • Define and demonstrate a mature management approach.
  • Utilise organisational concepts in conflict resolution.
Assessment: Total Marks 100: Formal Written Examination 40 marks (open book exam); Continuous Assessment 60 marks (1 x 2,500 word essay).
Compulsory Elements: Formal Written Examination; Continuous Assessment.
Penalties (for late submission of course/project work etc.): Where work is submitted up to and including 7 days late, 5% of the total marks available shall be deducted from the mark achieved. Where work is submitted up to and including 14 days late, 10% of the total marks available shall be deducted from the mark achieved. Work submitted 15 days late or more shall be assigned a mark of zero.
Pass Standard and any Special Requirements for Passing Module: 40% 80% attendance which is monitored by a class register.
End of Year Written Examination Profile: 1 x 1.5 hr(s) paper(s) (open book exam) to be taken in Summer 2022.
Requirements for Supplemental Examination: 1 x 1.5 hr(s) paper(s) (open book exam) to be taken in Autumn 2022. Marks in passed element(s) of Continuous Assessment are carried forward, Failed element(s) of Continuous Assessment must be repeated (as prescribed by the Module Coordinator).
