AP5801: The Contribution of Psychoanalysis to Adult Relationships

Module Objective: To provide participants with a theoretical and experiential introduction to psychoanalysis with particular focus on the centrality of relationship within that tradition.
Module Content: The Oedipal Relationship (Freud); Projection and Introjection (Klein); The Process of Individuation (Carl Jung); The Holding Environment (Winnicott); Current Thinking (Adam Phillips, Neville Symington).
Learning Outcome: On successful completion of this module, students should be able to:
  • Outline the major development in psychoanalysis since its beginning.
  • Describe, explain and illustrate the psychoanalytic concepts studied.
  • Present and support a thoughtful response to the psychoanalytic approach.
  • Embrace the material in terms of their life experience.
  • Analyse psychosocial situations from different psychoanalytic standpoints.
  • Identify strategies for solutions based on psychoanalysis.
  • Practice accessing the unconscious dimension in all types of communication.
Assessment: Total Marks 100: Formal Written Examination 40 marks (open book exam); Continuous Assessment 60 marks (1 x 2,500 word essay).
Compulsory Elements: Formal Written Examination; Continuous Assessment.
Penalties (for late submission of course/project work etc.): Where work is submitted up to and including 7 days late, 5% of the total marks available shall be deducted from the mark achieved. Where work is submitted up to and including 14 days late, 10% of the total marks available shall be deducted from the mark achieved. Work submitted 15 days late or more shall be assigned a mark of zero.
Pass Standard and any Special Requirements for Passing Module: 40% 80% attendance which is monitored by a class register.
End of Year Written Examination Profile: 1 x 1.5 hr(s) paper(s) (open book exam) to be taken in Winter 2021.
Requirements for Supplemental Examination: 1 x 1.5 hr(s) paper(s) (open book exam) to be taken in Autumn 2022. Marks in passed element(s) of Continuous Assessment are carried forward, Failed element(s) of Continuous Assessment must be repeated (as prescribed by the Module Coordinator).
