Module Objective: To examine the different ways in which autism can impact on daily life and social relationships.
Module Content: Emotions, family, relationships and sexuality; the economic, educational and social impact of autism; the various factors that affect people who have autism and the impact on daily living.
Learning Outcome: On successful completion of this module, students should be able to:
  • Understand the impact autism has on the development of friendships, sexual relationships and family life
  • Understand the impact autism has in education and the work environment
  • Explore the ways in which sensory difficulties play a part in communication, interaction and relationships of people with autism
  • Recognise the effects of mental health difficulties on daily living
  • Identify the impact of socio-economic and geographical factors on the experience of living with autism
  • Understand the impact of autism on independent living skills.
Assessment: Total Marks 200: Continuous Assessment 200 marks (1 x 1,500 - 2,000 word journal of learning, 100 marks; 1 x 1,500 - 2,000 word digital assessment, 100 marks).
Compulsory Elements: Continuous Assessment.
Penalties (for late submission of course/project work etc.): Where work is submitted up to and including 7 days late, 10% of the total marks available shall be deducted from the mark achieved. Where work is submitted up to and including 14 days late, 20% of the total marks available shall be deducted from the mark achieved. Work submitted 15 days late or more shall be assigned a mark of zero.
Pass Standard and any Special Requirements for Passing Module: 40%.
End of Year Written Examination Profile: No Formal Written Examination.
Requirements for Supplemental Examination: Marks in passed element(s) of Continuous Assessment are carried forward, Failed element(s) of Continuous Assessment must be repeated (as prescribed by the Module Co-ordinator).
