Statute B.

We, the Governing Body of University College, Cork - National University of Ireland, Cork (the University), under and by virtue of the powers in that behalf conferred on us by the above Act, do by this present instrument under the seal of the University make the Statute contained in the Schedule hereof for the general government of the said University.

Given under the Common Seal of the University this Fifteenth day of December, 1998.

SCHEDULE

Statute B

All previous Statutes of the University shall be read and construed with the alteration, additions and modifications hereinafter set forth.

Chapter I
Academic Council

  1. The members of the Academic Council shall be:
    (1) the President
    (2) the Registrar
    (3) the Professors
    (4) the Associate Professors
    (5) the Deans of the Faculties
    (6) six non-professorial academic staff elected by the Faculties of Arts and of Celtic Studies
    (7) three non-professorial academic staff elected by each of the Faculties of Science, Commerce, Engineering, Law, Food Science & Technology and by the Medical Faculty Board
    (8) heads and acting heads of departments
    (9) the President, the Education Officer and the Postgraduate Officer of the Students’ Union
    (10) one undergraduate student and one postgraduate student appointed by each Faculty
    (11) the Secretary & Bursar
    (12) the Librarian
    (13) the Director of the Computer Centre
    (14) the Director of Adult Continuing Education
    (15) the Director of the Language Centre
    (16) the Lecturers who were members of the Academic Council holding office immediately before the coming into operation of this Statute
    (17) up to four members co-opted by the Academic Council.
  2. The members elected under paragraphs (6) and (7) of section 1 of this Chapter shall, in respect of the Faculties of Arts and of Celtic Studies and for the other Faculties in respect of each, include at least one Lecturer and at least one Lecturer.
  3. Subject to the provisions of section 2 of this Chapter, the members elected under paragraphs (6), (7) and (10) of section 1 of this Chapter, shall, where feasible, in respect of the Faculties of Arts and of Celtic Studies and for the other Faculties in respect of each, include at least one man and at least one woman.
  4. The term of office of the members of the Academic Council shall be a fixed term of three years, with the exception of --
    (1) members under paragraph (8) of section 1 of this Chapter, who shall be members for the period of their appointment as head or acting head of department, if shorter than three years;
    (2) members under paragraphs (9) and (10) of section 1 of this Chapter, who shall be members for a period of up to one year;
    (3) members under paragraph (16) of section 1 of this Chapter, who shall continue as members until the 31st day of October, 1999;
    (4) co-opted members who shall be members for such period as the Academic Council determines;
    (5) a member who fills a casual vacancy, who shall be a member for the remainder of the term of office of the member who is being replaced.
  5. If a member, elected under paragraphs (6) or (7) of section 1 of this Chapter, ceases for any reason to be a member, the consequential casual vacancy will be filled on the nomination of the corresponding Dean or Deans.

Chapter II
Academic Board

  1. There shall be an Academic Board which shall consist of the President, the Registrar and such other members of Academic Council as the Academic Council shall determine by regulation.
  2. The Academic Council may delegate by regulation to the Academic Board such of its functions as it thinks fit.
  3. The Academic Board shall operate in such manner as the Academic Council may direct and its acts shall be subject to confirmation by the Academic Council unless the Academic Council otherwise directs.

Chapter III

  1. This Statute may be cited as Statute B of University College, Cork - National University of Ireland, Cork, or Stat. B. of U.C.C.
  2. This Statute shall come into operation on the Fifteenth day of December, 1998.
