Statute XC.
Irish Universities Act, 1908
University College, Cork
We, the Governing Body of University College, Cork, under
and by virtue of the powers in that behalf conferred on us by
the said Act, Do by this present instrument under the Seal
of University College, Cork, make the Statute contained in
the Schedule hereof for the general government of the said
College.
Given under the Common Seal of University College, Cork, this thirteenth day of April, 1972.

Statute XC.
Schedule
Statutes I. to LXXXIX. of University College, Cork shall be read
and construed with the additions, modifications and amendments
hereinafter set forth.
CHAPTER I.
Increased Stipends
- Notwithstanding any provisions to the contrary contained in
Statutes I. to LXXXIX. of University College, Cork, the annual
stipends of the President, of the full-time professorships and
lectureships and of the full-time Officers of the College shall, as from
the date specified hereunder, be those hereinafter set forth.
- The annual stipend of the President shall be £7,395 as from
1 January, 1972.
- (a) This annual stipend of each full-time professorship
(including this full-time professorships in the Faculty of Dairy
Science), with the exception of this full-time professorships referred
to in sub-sections (b), (c), (d) and (e) of this section, shall as from
1 January, 1972, be £4,170 increasing by annual increments of £159
to a maximum of £4,965.
- (b) The annual stipend of each of the full-time professorships
set out in this sub-section shall, as from 1 January, 1972, be £4,371
increasing by annual increments of £159 to a maximum of £5,166:
- Professorship of Anatomy
- Professorship of Chemistry
- Professorship of Experimental Physics
- Professorship of Physiology
- (c) The annual stipend of each of the full-time professorships
set out in this sub-section shall, as from 1 January, 1972, be £4,770
increasing by annual increments of £159 to a maximum of £5,565:
- Professorship of Conservative Dentistry
- Professorship of Dental Prosthetics
- Professorship of Dental Surgery
- Professorship of Orthodontics
- (d) The annual stipend of each of the full-time professorships
set out in this sub-section shall, as from 1 January, 1972, be £2,784:
- Professorship of Medicine
- Professorship of Paediatrics
- Professorship of Pathology
- Professorship of Psychiatry
- Professorship of Surgery
- (e) The annual stipend of full-time Associate Professorships
shall, as from 1 January, 1972, be £3,768 increasing by annual
increments of £159 to a maximum of £4,563.
- (f) The annual stipend of each of the part-time professorships
set out in this sub-section shall, as from 1 January, 1972, be
£1,575:
- Professorship of Obstetrics and Gynaecology
- Professorship of Common Law, Real Property and
Equity
- Professorship of Jurisprudence, Roman Law and
Personal Property
- (a) The annual stipend of each full-time lectureship (including
the full-time lectureships in the Faculty of Dairy Science), with the
exception of the lectureships referred to hi sub-sections (b) and (c) of
this section, shall, as from 1 January, 1972, be £2,760 increasing by
annual increments of £105 to a maximum of £3,810.
- (b) The annual stipend of each of the full-time lectureships set
out in this sub-section shall, as from 1 January, 1972, be £3,210
increasing by annual increments of £105 to a maximum of £4,260:
- Lectureship in Conservative Dentistry
- Lectureship in Dental Surgery
- Lectureship in Social Medicine
- (c) The annual stipend of each of the full-time lectureships set
out in this sub-section shall, as from 1 January, 1972, be £1,629
increasing by annual increments of £51 to a maximum of £2,130:
- Lectureship in Medicine
- Lectureship in Pathology, No. 2
- Lectureship in Preventative Dentistry
- Lectureship in Surgery
- (a) The annual stipend of the Secretary and Bursar shall be the
same as that provided in section 3(a) hereof.
- (b) The annual stipend of the Librarian shall be the same as that
provided in section 4(a) hereof.
- (a) The annual stipend of Readers shall, as from 1 January,
1972, be £3,378 increasing by annual increments of £105 to a maximum of £4,428.
- (b) Statute LXXIII., Chapter III., shall be amended with
effect from 1 January, 1972, by the substitution of the following for
the words "an additional stipend of one-sixth of the maximum
stipend applicable to the lectureship he holds":
".......such stipend as shall be determined by statute from
time to time; if such stipend provides for increments, a
Reader shall be granted one increment on the Reader's
scale for every increment on the lectureship scale formerly
payable to him."
CHAPTER II.
Professorship of Early and Medieval Irish Language and Literature
- There shall be established in the College, in the event of its
institution by the National University of Ireland, a Professorship of
Early and Medieval Irish Language and Literature.
- The said professorship shall be a full-time office within the
meaning of the statutes of the College and of the University. The
stipend of the Professorship shall be that set out in Chapter I.,
section 8(a) of this Statute. The previsions of Statute LXVII.,
Chapter IV., as amended, shall also apply to the office.
- The duties of the professor shall be to lecture in Early and
Medieval Irish Language and Literature for all degrees, diplomas
and certificates of the University and for all diplomas and certificates
of the College. He shall also examine in Early and Medieval Irish
Language and Literature for the College and, if required by the
Senate to do so, for the University. Welsh and Breton shall also be
deemed to be in the Department of Early and Medieval Irish
Language and Literature unless and until the Governing Body, in its
absolute discretion, shall decide otherwise.
- The said professorship shall be a pensionable office to which the
provisions of Statute LXXIX., as amended, and the Pension Scheme
annexed thereto, as amended, shall apply.
- The Professorship of Celtic Languages and Philology established
by Statute XLII., Chapter II., is hereby abolished. All references in
these Statutes to the Professorship of Celtic Languages and Philology
shall be deemed to be references to the Professorship of Early and
Medieval Irish Language and Literature.
CHAPTER III.
Lectureship in Histology
- There shall be established in the College, in the event of its.
institution by the National University of Ireland, a lectureship in the
Department of Anatomy to be known as the Lectureship in Histology.
- The said lectureship shall be a full-time office within the
meaning of the statutes of the College and of the University. The
stipend of the lectureship shall be that provided in Chapter I.,
section 4(a), of this Statute. The provisions of Statute LXVII.,
Chapter IV., as amended, shall also apply to the office.
- The duties of the lecturer shall be to lecture in Histology under
the direction of the Professor of Anatomy for all degrees, diplomas and
certificates of the University and for all diplomas and certificates of the
College. He shall also examine in Histology for the College and, if
required by the Senate to do so, for the University. He shall, in
addition, discharge such other duties appropriate to the office as shall
be assigned to him by the said Professor of Anatomy.
- The said lectureship shall be a pensionable office to which the
provisions of Statute LXXIX., as amended, and the Pension Scheme
annexed thereto, as amended, shall apply.
CHAPTER IV.
Lectureship in Sociology
With the consent of the present holder of the Lectureship in
Sociology, Statute XXXIV., Chapter II., as amended, is hereby
further amended by the addition of the following paragraph:
"The duties of the lecturer shall be to lecture in Sociology
under the direction of the Professor of Social Theory and
Institutions for all degrees, diplomas and certificates of the
University and for all diplomas and certificates of the College.
He shall also examine in Sociology for the College and, if
required by the Senate to do so, for the University. He shall, in
addition, discharge such other duties appropriate to the office
as shall be assigned to him by the said Professor of Social
Theory and Institutions."
CHAPTER V.
Lectureship in Psychiatry
- There shall be established in the College, in the event of its
institution by the National University of Ireland, a Lectureship in
Psychiatry.
- The said lectureship shall be a part-time non-pensionable office.
The stipend of the lectureship shall be £309.
- The duties of the lecturer shall be to lecture in Psychiatry under
the direction of the Professor of Psychiatry for all degrees, diplomas
and certificates of the University and for all diplomas and certificates
of the College. He shall also examine in Psychiatry for the College and,
if required by the Senate to do so, for the University. He shall, in
addition, discharge such other duties appropriate to the office as shall
be assigned to him by the said Professor of Psychiatry.
- This office shall be held by a recognised clinical teacher in
Psychiatry in Our Lady's Hospital, Cork.
- The Lectureship in Mental Diseases established by Statute I.,
Chapter XIII., is hereby abolished.
Statute XXVII., Chapter II., as already amended, is hereby
further amended as follows:
- (a) By the addition of the subject Early and Medieval Irish
Language and Literature to the Faculties of Arts and
Celtic Studies.
- (b) By the addition of the subject Histology to the Faculties
of Science and Medicine.
The professorship and lectureships established by this Statute shall
be tenable for the same term and upon the same conditions and the
holders thereof shall be subject to the same duties and obligations as if
the said professorship and lectureships had been included in Statutes I.
to LXXXIX. of University College, Cork.
- This Statute shall be construed with and as part of Statutes I. to
LXXXIX. of University College, Cork and may be cited as Statute XC.
of University College, Cork or Stat. XC. of Univ. Coll. Cork.
- This Statute shall come into operation on the thirteenth day
of April, 1972.
