Statute LXXI.
Irish Universities Act, 1908
University College, Cork
We, the Governing Body of University College, Cork, under
and by virtue of the powers in that behalf conferred on us by
the said Act, Do by this present instrument under the Seal
of University College, Cork, make the Statute contained in
the Schedule hereof for the general government of the said
College.
Given under the Common Seal of University College, Cork, this second day of July, 1965.

Statute LXXI.
Schedule
Statute I. to LXX. of University College, Cork shall be read and
construed with the additions, modifications and amendments
hereinafter set forth.
CHAPTER I.
The President
Section 10 of Chapter IV. of Statute I. is hereby revoked and in
lieu thereof there shall be substituted the following:
10. He shall have power to appoint some suitable person
to act during a vacancy in or during the temporary absence
of the holder of any Professorship, Lectureship or other office
or post in the College. The remuneration of such acting
appointee shall be fixed by the President but the rate of such
remuneration shall not exceed the maximum stipend or salary
of the vacant office or post.
CHAPTER II.
Lectureship in Medicine
- There shall be established in the College, in the event of its
institution by the National University of Ireland, a Lectureship in
Medicine.
- The said Lectureship shall be a full-time office within the
meaning of the statutes of the College and of the University. The
term "full-time" in this case shall not be interpreted as precluding the
holder of the Lectureship from receiving a stipend wholly in respect
of an appointment of the kind specified in section 6 of this Chapter.
He shall, however, be precluded from engaging in private practice
in say form.
- The inclusive stipend of the Lectureship shall be £1,250 per
annum increasing by annual increments of £37 l0s. to a maximum
of £1,400 per annum.
- Notwithstanding the provisions of Statute XXXIX., as
amended, the said Lectureship shall not be a pensionable office.
Neither shall the holder thereof be eligible to participate in the
Scheme for Payments to Widows established by Statute XLVII.,
Chapter II.
- The duties of the lecturer shall be to lecture in Medicine
under the direction of the Professor of Medicine for all degrees,
diplomas and certificates of the University and for all diplomas and
certificates of the College. He shall in addition examine in Medicine
for the College and, if required by the Senate to do so, for the
University.
- The said Lectureship shall be tenable only by a member of the
medical staff of the teaching hospital recognised by the College and
the University in which the Professor of Medicine has, as of right,
the control of an adequate teaching or professional unit of beds,
both male and female, and is the medical practitioner in charge,
and where the holder of the Lectureship has been appointed to
assist him.
- Notwithstanding the provisions of Statute XXVIII., Chapter
II., the holder of the said Lectureship shall, subject to good conduct
and the due fulfilment of his duties, and subject also to the
provisions of section 6 hereof, hold office for a period of five years
but no longer, or until he shall have reached the age of sixty-five
years, whichever event shall first occur.
CHAPTER III.
Lectureship in Economics, No. 2.
- There shall be established in the College, in the event of its
institution by the National University of Ireland, a Lectureship
in Economics, No. 2.
- The said Lectureship shall be a full-time office within the
meaning of the Statutes of the College and of the University. The
stipend of the Lectureship shall be the same as that provided in
Statute LXX., Chapter 1., section 5(a). The provisions of
Chapter IV., of Statute LXVII., as amended by Statute LXX.,
Chapter III., section 1, shall also apply to the office.
- The duties of the Lecturer shall be to lecture in Economics
under the direction of the Professor of Economics for all degrees,
diplomas and certificates of the University and for all diplomas
and certificates of the College. He shall in addition examine in
Economics for the College and, if required by the Senate to do so,
for the University.
- The said Lectureship shall be a pensionable office and
Table A of the Additional Pension Scheme annexed to Statute
XXXIX., Chapter II., as already amended, is hereby further
amended by the addition of the said office thereto.
CHAPTER IV.
Lectureship in Education
- There shall be established in the College, in the event of its
institution by the National University of Ireland, a Lectureship
in Education.
- The said Lectureship shall be a full-time office within the
meaning of the Statutes of the College and of the University. The
stipend of the Lectureship shall be the same as that provided in
Statute LXX., Chapter 1., section 5(a). The provisions of Chapter
IV. of Statute LXVII., as amended by Statute LXX., Chapter III.,
section 1, shall also apply to the office.
- The duties of the Lecturer shall be to lecture in Education
under the direction of the Professor of Education for all degrees,
diplomas and certificates of the University and for all diplomas
and certificates of the College. He shall in addition examine in
Education for the College and, if required by the Senate to do so,
for the University. The Lecturer shall also supervise courses
of practical training (including the giving of demonstration lessons)
when required to do so by the said Professor.
- The said Lectureship shall be a pensionable office and
Table A of the Additional Pension Scheme annexed to Statute
XXXIX., Chapter II., as already amended, is hereby further
amended by the addition of the said office thereto.
CHAPTER V.
Lectureship in Thoracic Surgery.
- There shall be established in the College, in the event of its
institution by the National University of Ireland, a Lectureship
in Thoracic Surgery.
- The said Lectureship shall be a part-time non-pensionable
office. The stipend of the Lectureship shall be £145 per annum.
- The duties of the Lecturer shall be to lecture in Surgery,
including Thoracic Surgery, under the direction of the Professor
of Surgery for all degrees, diplomas and certificates of the University
and for all diplomas and certificates of the College. He shall also
examine in Surgery, including Thoracic Surgery, for the College
and, if required by the Senate to do so, for the University.
- The said Lectureship shall be tenable only by a recognised
clinical teacher in Thoracic Surgery in a recognised teaching
hospital.
CHAPTER VI.
Increments for Previous Service
- 1. Statute LVIII., Chapter 1., section 5, is hereby amended by
the addition thereto of the following two further paragraphs:
Service as an Assistant Secretary or Librarian shall be
deemed for increment purposes to be equated to that of a
full-time Lecturer.
Service as a clerical officer or library assistant shall be
deemed for increment purposes to be equated to that of a
full-time Assistant.
- The foregoing amendment shall be deemed to have had
effect as from the date of coming into operation of said Statute
LVII.
CHAPTER VII.
Secretary and Bursar
- Statute LXX., Chapter 1., section 6 (a), is hereby amended
by the substitution of the reference " 4(a) (ii) " for the reference
"4(a) (i) " where it occurs in that section and paragraph.
- The foregoing amendment shall be deemed to have had effect
as from 1 February, 1964.
CHAPTER VIII.
Professorship of Economic Theory
Professorship of Nuclear and Theoretical Physics
Assistant Secretary.
- The part-time Professorship of Economic Theory established
by Chapter XII. of Statute LVIII. is hereby abolished.
- The part-time Professorship of Nuclear and Theoretical
Physics established by Chapter IV. of Statute LXIV. is hereby
abolished.
- The office of Assistant Secretary established by Chapter
XIII. of Statute LVIII. is hereby abolished.
CHAPTER IX.
Scheme for Payments to Widows
Statue LVI., Chapter VI section 2, is hereby amended by the
insertion before the words "clerical officers" where they occur in
that section of the words "farm managers."
Statute XXVII., Chapter II., as already amended, is hereby
further amended as follows:
- (a) by the addition of the subjects Orthopaedic Surgery and
Thoracic Surgery to the Faculty of Medicine;
- (b) by the deletion of the subject Economic Theory from the
Faculties of Arts and Commerce.
The Lectureships established by this Statute shall, subject to
the provisions of Chapter II. and Chapter V. in respect of the Lectureships established by those Chapters, be tenable for the same term and
upon the same conditions and the holders thereof shall be subject
to the same duties end obligations as if the said Lectureships had
been included in Statutes I. to LXX. of University College, Cork.
- This Statute shall be construed with and as part of Statutes I.
to LXX. of University College, Cork, and may be cited as
Statute LXXI., of University College, Cork, or Stat. LXXI. of
Univ. Coll. Cork.
- This Statute shall come into operation on the twenty-fourth
day of June, 1965.
Present when the Common Seal of University College, Cork,
was affixed.
