We, the Governing Body of University College, Cork, under and by virtue of the powers in that behalf conferred on us by the said Act, Do by this present instrument under the Seal of University College, Cork, make the Statute contained in the Schedule hereof for the general government of the said College.
Given under the Common Seal of University College, Cork, this twenty-ninth day of October, 1956.

Statutes I. to LVII. of University College, Cork, shall be read and construed with the additions, modifications and amendments hereinafter set forth.
Notwithstanding any provisions to the contrary contained in Statutes I. to LVII. of University College, Cork, the yearly stipends of the President, of the Professorships and Lectureships hereinafter mentioned and of the Officers of the College shall, as from 1st April, 1956, be those set forth in this Statute.
The yearly stipend of the President shall be £2,650 and he shall also be entitled to residence, fuel and light valued for pension purposes at £300 per annum He shall, in addition, be entitled to a non-pensionable allowance of £400 per annum in respect of the expenses of his office.
The yearly stipend of the Registrar shall be £360. He shall also be entitled to either residence, fuel and light, or, at the discretion of the Governing Body, an allowance of £300 per annum in lieu thereof, which amount shall be the value of the perquisite far pension purposes, and Statute XXXIX., Chapter II., as already amended, is hereby further amended accordingly.
(a) The stipends of each of the following full-time Professor- ships shall be £1,600 per annum; increasing by annual increments of £60 to a maximum stipend of £1,900 per annum:

Provided that on the occurrence of the first vacancy in each of the foregoing offices, the stipend of each such office shall thenceforth be the same as those of the Professorships set out in sub-section (b) of this Section.
(b) The stipends of each of the following full-time Professorships shall be £1,500 per annum, increasing by annual increments of £60 to a maximum stipend of £1,800 per annum:

(c) The stipends of each of the following full-time Lectureships shall be £1,035 per annum, increasing by annual increments of £45 to a maximum stipend of £1,350 per annum:

(a) The stipend of the Secretary and Bursar shall be the same as that provided in Section 3 (b) above.
(b) The stipend of the Librarian shall be the same as that provided in Section 3 (c) above.
In determining the point on the scale at which the holder of any of the full-time offices set forth in Sections 3 and 4 above shall be placed, credit for previous service service in the College shall be allowed on the following basis:
i. One year for each year of full-time statutory service in the
College in a full-time office in the same category,
and
ii. three-fourths of service as a full-time Lecturer on appointment as
a full-time Professor,
and
iii.
(a) one-half of service as a full-time Assistant on appointment as a full-time Professor or
(b) two-thirds of service as a full-time Assistant an appointment as a full-time Lecturer.
Part-time service shall count for increment purposes as one half the value
of full-time service in the same category.
Service as a College Lecturer or College Professor shall be deemed far
increment purposes to be equated to that of an Assistant.
The Governing Body, on the recommendation of the President, shall have power to grant to the holder of a full-time statutory office with special professional experience increments not exceeding two in number on the basic scale applicable to the office.
Where the increment date, calculated in accordance with the foregoing provisions, or in accordance with the date of appointment, falls on a day in the month other than the first, such increment date shall, for administrative convenience, be taken to be the first day of the month in which the increment falls due.
(a) The yearly stipend of each of the following part-time Professorships shall, as from 1st April, 1956, be as set forth hereunder:

The stipend of the Professorship of Agriculture shall, as from 1st April, 1956, be the same as that of the Professorships set out in Section 3(a) of Chapter I. of this Statute. In addition, the holder of the Professorship shall be paid a sum of £120 per annum in respect of his services as Director of the College Farms.
Provided that on the occurrence of the first vacancy in the office, the stipend shall thenceforth be the same as that of the Professorships set out in Section 3(b) of Chapter I. of this Statute.
The stipends of each of the following full-time Professorships shall, as from 1st April, 1956, be the same as those of the Professorships set out in Section 3(b) of Chapter I. of this Statute:-

The stipend of the full-time Lectureship in Dairy Chemistry shall, as from 1st April, 1956, be the same as that of the Lectureships set out in Section 3(c) of Chapter I. of this Statute.
The provisions of Sections 5, 6 and 7 of Chapter I. of this Statute shall be applicable to the Professorships and Lectureship set forth in this Chapter.
Chapter II. of Statute LI., Chapter II. of Statute LII.,, and Chapter I. of Statute LIII., are hereby revoked as from 31st March, 1956.
There shall be paid, as from 1st April, 1956, to each full-time statutory Officer of the College and to each full-time Professor and full-time Lecturer who is a married man or widower, or a widow, a non-pensionable allowance of £40 per annum in respect of each of his/her children from date of birth up to the age such children cease to attend continuously a teaching institution of less than university rank, or until the completion of the eighteenth year of age, whichever shall first occur.
In the event of the death while in office of a person in receipt of children's allowance(s) in accordance with the foregoing Section, such allowance(s) shall thereupon be payable to the surviving parent or guardian of the child (ren) of such person in accordance with the provisions of said Section.
Where the date on which a child allowance falls due or ceases in accordance with the foregoing provisions is a day in the month other than the first, such allowance shall, for administrative convenience, be deemed to fall due or cease, as the case may be, on the first day of the month in which it falls due or ceases.
Notwithstanding any provisions to the contrary contained in previous Statutes, the following increased annual pensions of farmer holders of full-time statutory offices in the College shall be deemed to have became operative as from 1st April, 1956:

Pension Fund No. 2: In addition to the obligations imposed by Statute XLVII., Chapter I., Section 2, and by Statute LI., Chapter III., Section 1, there shall be paid annually as from 1st April, 1956, into Pension Fund No. 2 a further sum of £2,500 until such time as the capital of said Pension Fund shall reach £150,000.
Pension Fund No. 4: In addition to the obligations imposed by Statute XLVII., Chapter I., Section 3, and by Statute LI., Chapter III., Section 2, there shall be paid annually as from 1st April, 1956, into Pension Fund No. 4 a further sum of £600.
Notwithstanding the provisions of previous Statutes, a temporary increase of ten per cent. on the statutory salary paid to each full-time statutory office holder in the College in respect of the period 1st July, 1955, to 31st March, 1956, is hereby authorised; in addition, a temporary increase at the rate of £7 10s. 0d. per qualified child in respect of the same period is hereby authorised to each full-time statutory office holder in the College (or to the widow of such office holder) in receipt of Children's Allowances.
Statute LVII., Chapter 1., Section 2 (c) is hereby amended by the substitution of the wards "Catholic Archbishops and Bishops of Ireland" for the word "Bishop" where it occurs in that sub-section.
The present holder of the Professorship of Economics and Commerce established by Statute I., Chapter XIII., of University College, Cork, having so agreed, the said Professorship shall henceforth be known as the "Professorship of Economics."
Notwithstanding the provisions of this or of previous Statutes, the stipend of the Professorship of Archaeology established as a full-time Professorship by Statute LIV., Chapter III., shall, as from 1st April, 1956, be £1,350 per annum, rising by annual increments of £60 to a maximum stipend of £1,650 per annum, and the present holder's previous full-time service only shall count for increment purposes.
In the event of the terms of the past of Curator of the Cork Public Museum at present held by the holder of this Professorship being amended, the stipend of the Professorship shall thereupon be reviewed by the Governing Body.
The Professorship of German in the College established as a part-time Professorship by Statute XV., Section 1, shall cease to be a part-time office and the said Professorship shall be deemed a full-time Professorship as from 1st August, 1952, and the present holder thereof deemed to be a full-time Professor within the meaning of the Statutes of the College and of the University.
The stipend of the Professorship shall, as from 1st April, 1956, be £1,350 per annum.
The said Professorship shall be deemed a pensionable office as from 1st August, 1952, and Table A of the Additional Pension Scheme annexed to Statute XXXIX., Chapter II., as already amended, is hereby further amended by the addition of the said office thereto.
There shall be established in the College, in the event of its institution by the Senate of the National University of Ireland, an Associate Professorship of Civil Engineering.
The said Associate Professorship shall be a full-time office within the meaning of the Statutes of the College and of the University. The stipend of the Associate Professorship shall be the same as that of the Professorships set out in Chapter I., Section 3 (b) of this Statute. The provisions of Sections 5, 6 and 7 of that Chapter and of Chapter III. of this Statute shall also apply to the office.
The duties of the Associate Professor shall be to lecture and examine in Civil Engineering under the general direction of the Professor of Civil Engineering for all Degrees, Diplomas and Certificates of the College and of the University. He shall also act as Engineer to the College.
The said Associate Professorship shall be in substitution for the existing Lectureship in Civil Engineering established by Statute XXV., which Lectureship shall be abolished if the present holder is appointed to the Associate Professorship hereby established or ceases by resignation or otherwise to hold office. Statute XXV. of University College, Cork, shall on the occurrence of either of such events be revoked.
The said Associate professorship shall be a pensionable office and Table A of the Additional Pension Scheme annexed to Statute XXXIX., Chapter II., as already amended, is hereby further amended by the addition of the said office thereto.
Lectureship in Civil Engineering No. 2: On the revocation of Statute XXV., as provided in Section 4 of this Chapter, the full-time Lectureship in Civil Engineering, No. 2, established by Statute LV, Chapter III., of University College, Cork, shall thenceforth be known as the "Lectureship in Civil Engineering."
There shall be established in the College, in the event of its institution by the Senate of the National University of Ireland, a Professorship of Economic Theory.
The said Professorship shall be a part-time and non-pensionable office. The stipend of the Professorship shall be £500 per annum.
The duties of the Professor shall be to lecture and examine in Economic Theory under the general direction of the Professor of Economics for all Degrees, Diplomas and Certificates of the College and of the University.
The said Professorship shall be in substitution for the existing Lectureship in Economics instituted by Statute XXXI., Chapter IV., which Lectureship shall be abolished if the present holder is appointed to the Professorship hereby established or ceases by resignation or otherwise to hold office. Chapter IV. of Statute XXXI. shall, on the occurrence of either of such events, be revoked.
Lectureship in Economics, No. 2: On the revocation of Chapter IV. of Statute XXXI., as provided in the foregoing Section, the full-time Lectureship in Economics, No. 2, established by Statute LVII. Chapter IV., shall thenceforth be known as the " Lectureship in Economics."
Chapter XXXVIII. of Statute I. of University College, Cork, refers
to an Assistant Secretary, and in pursuance thereof the office of Assistant
Secretary is hereby established.
The Assistant Secretary shall be appointed by and be removable by
the Governing Body.
The Assistant Secretary shall, subject to good conduct and the due fulfilment of his duties, hold office until he shall have attained the age of sixty-five years and may thereafter be continued in office by the Governing Body from year to year for a period not exceeding five years.
Provided that such further continuance in office is recommended to the Governing Body by the President.
The stipend of the Assistant Secretary shall be £1,020 per annum. The provisions of Chapter III. of this Statute shall also apply to the office.
The Assistant Secretaryship shall be a pensionable office, and Table A of Statute XXXIX., Chapter II., as already amended, is hereby further amended by the addition of the said office thereto.
In the event of the appointment to the Assistant Secretaryship of a person who, at the time of appointment, has had continuous service as a full-time clerical officer in the College, such person shall retain the benefit of his previous full-time service for salary increment purposes (to the extent of two-thirds of such service), for pension purposes and for widow's pension purposes.
The duties of the Assistant Secretary shall be:
i. to assist the Secretary and Bursar in the performance of his duties under the Statutes and Regulations of the College, and to act for him during his absence or incapacity; and
ii. to act as secretary of any committee of the Governing Body as may be required of him by the Governing Body, and to discharge such other secretarial, accounting and administrative duties as may be assigned to him by the President or Secretary and Bursar.
In the performance of his duties the Assistant Secretary shall be subject to the same duties and obligations as are set forth in the Statutes and Regulations of the College in respect of the Secretary and Bursar.
Statute XXVII., Chapter II., as already amended, is hereby further amended as follows:
i. By the addition to the Faculty of Arts of the subject Economic Theory;
ii. By the addition to the Faculty of Commerce of the subjects:
Economic Theory, |
Common Law, Real Property and Equity, |
Jurisprudence, Roman Law and Personal Property; |
iii. By the deletion from the Faculty of Commerce of the subject Commerce.
The Professorships established by this Statute shall be tenable for the same term and upon the same conditions and the holders thereof shall be subject to the same duties and obligations as if the said Professorships had been included in Statutes I. to LVII. of University College, Cork.
This Statute shall be construed with and as part of Statutes I. to LVII. of University College, Cork, and may be cited as Statute LVIII. of University College, Cork, or Stat. LVIII. of Univ. Coll, Cork.
This Statute shall come into operation on the twenty-ninth day of October, 1956.
