Statute 178

Irish Universities Act, 1908

University College, Cork

We, the Governing Body of University College, Cork, under and by virtue of the powers in that behalf conferred on us by the above Act, do by this present instrument under the Seal of University College, Cork make the Statute contained in the Schedule hereof for the general government of the said College.

Given under the Common Seal of University College, Cork this First day of July, 1997.

SCHEDULE.

Statute 178.

Statutes 1 to 177 of University College, Cork shall be read and construed with the additions, modifications and amendments hereinafter set forth.

Chapter I.
Department of Oral Health and Development

  1. There shall be a Department of Oral Health and Development, which shall comprise the whole of the memberships of the Department of Orthodontics and of the Department of Preventive and Paediatric Dentistry which existed immediately prior to the coming into force of this Statute and any other Professorship, Lectureship, Assistantship or Demonstratorship which may hereinafter established in said Department of Oral Health and Development.
  2. All references in these Statutes to the "Department of Orthodontics", or to the "Department of Preventive and Paediatric Dentistry" shall be deemed to be references to the "Department of Oral Health and Development".
  3. The Department of Oral Health and Development shall cater for all strands of the discipline of Oral Health and Development, with particular reference to Orthodontics, Preventive Dentistry, Paediatric Dentistry and Public Dental Health.
  4. The provisions of this Chapter and of Chapters II., III., IV., and V. shall come into effect as from a date to be determined by the Governing Body, not earlier than 1 March, 1998.

Chapter II.
Professorship of Orthodontics

Statute 69, Chapter IV., section 3, is hereby amended by the replacement of the first sentence by the following:
" 3. The duties of the Professor shall be to lecture in Orthodontics, under the general direction of the Head of the Department of Oral Health and Development, for all degrees, diplomas and certificates of the University and for all diplomas and certificates of the College."

Chapter III.
Professorship of Preventive and Paediatric Dentistry

  1. With the consent of the present holder of the Professorship of Preventive and Paediatric Dentistry, established by Statute 131, Chapter I., the said Professorship shall be subject to the provisions of this Chapter.
  2. Statute 131, Chapter I., section 4 shall be amended by the replacement of the first sentence by the following
    "4. The duties of the Professor shall be to lecture in Preventive and Paediatric Dentistry, under the general direction of the Head of the Department of Oral Health and Development, for all degrees, diplomas and certificates of the University and for all diplomas and certificates of the College."

Chapter IV.
Lectureship in Orthodontics

Statute 131, Chapter IV., section 4, shall be replaced by the following:
"4. The duties of the Lecturer shall be to lecture in Orthodontics, under the direction of the Head of the Department of Oral Health and Development, for all degrees, diplomas and certificates of the University and for all diplomas and certificates of the College. The Lecturer shall also examine in Orthodontics for the College and, if required by the Senate to do so, for the University. The duties shall include the obligation to discharge such professional duties appropriate to the office as shall be agreed between the College and the authority or authorities which may control the Hospital or Hospitals associated with the College for the purposes of dental education; said professional duties may include duties to be carried out on behalf of the Southern Health Board or other Health Boards as may be agreed between the College and said Board(s)."

Chapter V.
Lectureship in Preventive and Paediatric Dentistry

  1. Statute 72, Chapter VII., section 4, shall be replaced by the following:
    "4. The duties of the Lecturer shall be to lecture in Preventive and Paediatric Dentistry, under the direction of the Head of the Department of Oral Health and Development, for all degrees, diplomas and certificates of the University and for all diplomas and certificates of the College. The Lecturer shall also examine in Preventive and Paediatric Dentistry for the College and, if required by the Senate to do so, for the University. The duties shall include the obligation to discharge such professional duties appropriate to the office as shall be agreed between the College and the authority or authorities which may control the Hospital or Hospitals associated with the College for the purposes of dental education; said professional duties may include duties to be carried out on behalf of the Southern Health Board or other Health Boards as may be agreed between the College and said Board(s)."

Chapter VI.

  1. This Statute shall be construed with and as part of Statutes 1 to 177 of University College, Cork and may be cited as Statute 178 of University College, Cork or Stat. 178 of Univ. Coll. Cork.
  2. This Statute will come into operation on the First day of July, 1997.
