Statute 172

Irish Universities Act, 1908

University College, Cork

We the Governing Body of University College, Cork, under and by virtue of the powers in that behalf conferred on us by the above Act, do by this present instrument under the seal of University College, Cork make the Statute contained in the Schedule hereof for the general government of the said College.

Given under the Common Seal of University College, Cork this Twenty-third day of January, 1996.

Statute 172

Schedule

Statutes 1 to 171 of University College, Cork shall be read and construed with the additions, modifications and amendments hereinafter set forth.

CHAPTER I.
Professorship of Applied Mathematics

  1. The Professorship of Mathematical Physics, established by Statute 2, Chapter I., shall henceforth be known as the "Professorship of Applied Mathematics".
  2. On the next appointment to the Professorship of Applied Mathematics the said Professor shall be Head of the Department of Applied Mathematics for a period of at least five years. In the event of the Governing Body determining, by the making of a Statute or Regulation or otherwise, that new arrangements shall apply to the appointment of the Head of the Department of Applied Mathematics, the holder of the said Professorship shall thenceforth have the obligation of acting as the Head of the Department of Applied Mathematics for such period or periods as the Governing Body may decide.
  3. The duties of the Professor shall be to lecture in Applied Mathematics for all degrees, diplomas and certificates of the University and for all diplomas and certificates of the College. He/She shall discharge these duties under the general direction of the Chairperson of the School of Mathematics, Applied Mathematics and Statistics, appointed in accordance with Chapter III., section 3, of this Statute, and shall, in addition discharge such other duties appropriate to the office as shall be assigned by the said Chairperson, provided that accountability for teaching shall in the first instance be to the Head of the Department of Applied Mathematics and then to the said Chairperson. The Professor shall also examine in Applied Mathematics for the College, and, if required by the Senate to do so, for the University.

CHAPTER II.
Department of Applied Mathematics

The Department of Mathematical Physics shall henceforth be known as the "Department of Applied Mathematics". The subject Mathematical Physics shall be deemed to be in the Department of Applied Mathematics.

CHAPTER III.
School of Mathematics, Applied Mathematics and Statistics

  1. The Departments of Mathematics, Applied Mathematics and Statistics shall henceforth operate within a co-operative structure entitled "The School of Mathematics, Applied Mathematics and Statistics".
  2. The Chairperson shall, subject to the Regulations referred to in section 5, assign teaching duties to the members of the School. Said teaching and other appropriate duties of the members of the School shall be carried out under the general direction of the Chairperson of the School.

CHAPTER IV
Professorship of Mathematics

  1. With the consent of the present holder of the Professorship of Mathematics, established by Statute I, Chapter XIII., the provisions of sections 3 and 4 shall henceforth apply. Said provisions and the provisions of section 2 shall apply to the next appointee to the Professorship.
  2. On the next appointment to the Professorship of Mathematics the said Professor shall be Head of the Department of Mathematics for a period of at least five years. In the event of the Governing Body determining, by the making of a Statute or Regulation or otherwise that the new arrangements shall apply to the appointment of the Head of the Department of Mathematics, the holder of the said Professorship shall thenceforth have the obligation of acting as the Head of the Department of Mathematics for such period or periods as the Governing Body may decide.
  3. The duties of the Professor shall be to lecture in Mathematics for all degrees, diplomas and certificates of the University and for all diplomas and certificates of the College. He/She shall discharge these duties under the general direction of the Chairperson of the School of Mathematics, Applied Mathematics and Statistics, appointed in accordance with Chapter III., section 3, of this Statute, and shall, in addition discharge such other duties appropriate to the office as shall be assigned by the said Chairperson, provided that accountability for teaching shall in the first instance be to the Head of the Department of Mathematics and then to the said Chairperson. The Professor shall also examine in Mathematics for the College and, if required by the Senate to do so, for the University.

CHAPTER V
Professorship of Statistics

  1. The provisions of this Chapter shall henceforth apply to the Professorship of Statistics, established by Statute 96, Chapter VI.
  2. On the next appointment to the Professorship of Statistics the said Professor shall be Head of the Department of Statistics for a period of at least five years. In the event of the Governing Body determining, by the making of a Statute or Regulation or otherwise, that the new arrangements shall apply to the appointment of the Head of the Department of Statistics, the holder of the said Professorship shall thenceforth have the obligation of acting as the Head of the Department of Statistics for such period or periods as the Governing Body may decide.
  3. The duties of the Professor shall be to lecture in Statistics for all degrees, diplomas and certificates of the University and for all diplomas and certificates of the College. He/She shall discharge these duties under the general direction of the Chairperson of the School of Mathematics, Applied Mathematics and Statistics, appointed in accordance with Chapter III., section 3, of this Statute, and shall, in addition discharge such other duties appropriate to the office as shall be assigned by the said Chairperson, provided that accountability for teaching shall in the first instance be to the Head of the Department of Statistics, and then to the said Chairperson. The Professor shall also examine in Statistics for the College and, if required by the Senate to do so, for the University.

CHAPTER VI.
Lectureship in Mathematics
Lectureship in Mathematics No. 2
Lectureship in Mathematics No. 3.

  1. The provisions of this Chapter shall apply to the Lectureship in Mathematics (created by Statute 55, Chapter IV.), the Lectureship in Mathematics No. 2 (created by Statute 70, Chapter IX.), and the Lectureship in Mathematics No. 3 (created by Statute 76, Chapter VI.).
  2. The duties of the holder of each of the Lectureships set forth in section 1 shall be to lecture in Mathematics for all degrees, diplomas and certificates of the University and for all diplomas and certificates of the College. They shall discharge these duties under the general direction of the Chairperson of the School of Mathematics, Applied Mathematics and Statistics, appointed in accordance with Chapter III., section 3, of this Statute, and shall in addition, discharge such other duties appropriate to the office as shall be assigned by the said Chairperson, provided that accountability for teaching shall in the first instance be to the Head of the Department of Mathematics and then to the said Chairperson. The Lecturers shall also examine in Mathematics for the College and, if required by the Senate to do so, for the University.

CHAPTER VII.
Lectureship in Applied Mathematics

  1. The Lectureship in Mathematical Physics, established by Statute 55, Chapter V., shall henceforth be known as the Lectureship in Applied Mathematics.
  2. The duties of the said Lecturer shall be to lecture in Applied Mathematics for all degrees, diplomas and certificates of the University and for all diplomas and certificates of the College. He/She shall discharge these duties under the general direction of the Chairperson of the School of Mathematics, Applied Mathematics and Statistics, appointed in accordance with Chapter III., section 3, of this Statute. and shall, in addition, discharge such other duties appropriate to the office as shall be assigned by the said Chairperson, provided that accountability for teaching shall in the first instance be to the Head of the Department of Applied Mathematics and then to the said Chairperson. The said Lecturer shall also examine in Applied Mathematics for the College and, if required by the Senate to do so, for the University.

CHAPTER VIII.
Lectureship in Applied Mathematics No. 2

  1. . With the consent of the present holder of the Lectureship in Mathematical Physics No. 3, established by Statute 80, Chapter XV., the provisions of this Chapter shall henceforth apply.
  2. The Lectureship in Mathematical Physics No. 3, shall henceforth be known as the "Lectureship in Applied Mathematics No. 2".
  3. The duties of the said Lecturer shall be to lecture in Applied Mathematics for all degrees, diplomas and certificates of the University and for all diplomas and certificates of the College. He/She shall discharge these duties under the general direction of the Chairperson of the School of Mathematics, Applied Mathematics and Statistics, appointed in accordance with Chapter III., section 3, of this Statute, and shall, in addition, discharge such other duties appropriate to the office as shall be assigned by the said Chairperson, provided that accountability for teaching shall in the first instance be to the Head of the Department of Applied Mathematics and then to the said Chairperson. The said Lecturer shall also examine in Applied Mathematics for the College and, if required by the Senate to do so, for the University.

CHAPTER IX.
Lectureship in Statistics

  1. With the consent of the present holder of the Lectureship in Statistics, established by Statute 80, Chapter XXII., the provisions of this Chapter shall henceforth apply.
  2. The duties of the said Lecturer shall he to lecture in Statistics for all degrees, diplomas and certificates of the University and for all diplomas and certificates of the College. He/She shall discharge these duties under the general direction of the Chairperson of the School of Mathematics, Applied Mathematics and Statistics, appointed in accordance with Chapter III., section 3, of this Statute, and shall, in addition, discharge such other duties appropriate to the office as shall be assigned by the said Chairperson, provided that accountability for teaching shall in the first instance be to the Head of the Department of Statistics and then to the said Chairperson. The said Lecturer shall also examine in Statistics for the College and, if required by the Senate to do so, for the University.

CHAPTER X.
Associate Professorships

  1. With the consent of the present holders, the provisions of this Chapter shall henceforth apply to Associate Professorships established by Statute 122, Chapter I., as amended, which are assigned by the Governing Body to the departments in the School of Mathematics, Applied Mathematics and Statistics established by Chapter III. of this Statute.
  2. The duties of the holder of each of the said Associate Professorships shall be to lecture in the subject assigned by the Governing Body for all degrees, diplomas and certificates of the University and for all diplomas and certificates of the College. They shall discharge these duties under the general direction of the Chairperson of the School of Mathematics, Applied Mathematics and Statistics, appointed in accordance with Chapter III., section 3, of this Statute, and shall, in addition, discharge such other duties appropriate to the office as shall be assigned by the said Chairperson, provided that accountability for teaching shall in the first instance be to the Head of the relevant Department and then to the said Chairperson. The said Associate Professors shall also examine in the subjects assigned by the Governing Body for the College and, if required by the Senate to do so, for the University.
  3. The said Associate Professors shall also have the obligation of acting as Chairperson of the School of Mathematics, Applied Mathematics and Statistics, in accordance with the provisions of Chapter III., of the Statute, for such period or periods as the Governing Body shall determine or until the appointment shall have been terminated by the Governing Body.

CHAPTER XI.
Lectureships

  1. With the consent of the present holders, the provisions of this Chapter shall apply to Lectureships established by Statute 125, Chapter II., as amended, which are assigned by the Governing Body to the departments in the School of Mathematics, Applied Mathematics and Statistics established by Chapter III., of this Statute.
  2. The duties of the holder of each of the said Lectureships shall be to lecture in the subject assigned by the Governing Body for all degrees, diplomas and certificates of the University and for all diplomas and certificates of the College. They shall discharge these duties under the general direction of the Chairperson of the School of Mathematics, Applied Mathematics and Statistics, appointed in accordance with Chapter III., section 3, of this Statute, and shall in addition, discharge such other duties appropriate to the office as shall be assigned by the said Chairperson, provided that accountability for teaching shall in the first instance be to the Head of the relevant Department and then to the said Chairperson. The said Lectureships shall also examine in the subjects assigned by the Governing Body for the College and, if required by the Senate to do so, for the University.

CHAPTER XII.
Full-time Lectureships

The provisions of Statute 104, Chapter IV., in so far as it relates to the serving of a probationary period of two years, shall not apply to Lectureships filled in accordance with the provisions of Statute 125, Chapter II., as amended.

CHAPTER XIII.
Department of Child Health

The Department of Paediatrics shall henceforth be known as the "Department of Child Health".

CHAPTER XIV.

  1. This Statute shall be construed with and as part of Statutes 1 to 171 of University College, Cork and may be cited as Statute 172 of University College, Cork or Stat. 172 of Univ. Coll. Cork.
  2. This Statute will come into operation on the Twenty-third day of January, 1996.
