Statute 166.

Irish Universities Act, 1908

University College, Cork

We, the Governing Body of University College, Cork, under and by virtue of the powers in that behalf conferred on us by the said Act, Do by this present instrument under the Seal of University College, Cork, make the Statute contained in the Schedule hereof for the general government of the said College.

Given under the Common Seal of University College, Cork, this fourteenth day of December, 1993.

Statute 166.

Schedule

Statutes 1 to 165 of University College, Cork shall be read and construed with the additions, modifications and amendments hereinafter set forth.

CHAPTER I.
Professorship of Sociology

  1. With the consent of the present holder of the Professorship of Social Theory and Institutions, established by Statute 83, Chapter I, the said Professorship shall be subject to the provisions of this Chapter.
  2. The Professorship of Social Theory and Institutions shall henceforth be known as the "Professorship of Sociology". All references in these Statutes to the "Professorship of Social Theory and Institutions" shall henceforth be deemed to be references to the "Professorship of Sociology".
  3. Statute 83, Chapter I., Section 3, shall be replaced by the following:

    "3. The duties of the Professor shall be to lecture in Sociology for all degrees, diplomas and certificates of the University and for all diplomas and certificates of the College. The Professor shall also examine in Sociology for the College and, if required by the Senate to do so, for the University."

  4. The provisions of Statute 146, Chapter III., are hereby deleted.

CHAPTER II.
Department of Applied Social Studies

There shall be a Department of Applied Social Studies. "Applied Social Studies" shall be deemed to embrace the subjects "Social Administration" and "Social Work".

CHAPTER III.
Associate Professorship of Applied Social Studies

  1. With the consent of the present holder of the Associate Professorship of Social Theory and Institutions (Social Work and Social Administration), established by Statute 146, Chapter IV., the said Associate Professorship shall henceforth be subject to the provisions of this Chapter.
  2. The Associate Professorship of Social Theory and Institutions (Social Work and Social Administration) shall henceforth be known as the "Associate Professorship of Applied Social Studies". All references in these Statutes to the "Associate Professorship of Social Theory and Institutions (Social Work and Social Administration)" shall henceforth be deemed to be references to the "Associate Professorship of Applied Social Studies".
  3. Statute 146, Chapter IV., Section 3, shall be replaced by the following:

CHAPTER IV.
Department of Restorative Dentistry

  1. There shall be a Department of Restorative Dentistry, which shall comprise the whole of the memberships of the Department of Conservative Dentistry and of the Department of Dental Prosthetics which existed immediately prior to the coming into force of this Statute and any other Professorship, Lectureship, Assistantship or Demonstratorship which may be hereinafter established in said Department of Restorative Dentistry.
  2. All references in these Statutes to the "Department of Conservative Dentistry" or to the "Department of Dental Prosthetics" shall be deemed to be references to the "Department of Restorative Dentistry".
  3. The Department of Restorative Dentistry shall cater for all strands of the discipline of Restorative Dentistry, with particular reference to Conservative Dentistry, Dental Prosthetics and Periodontology.
  4. The provisions of this Chapter and of Chapters V, VI, VII and VIII, shall come into effect as from a date to be determined by the Governing Body.

CHAPTER V.
Professorship of Restorative Dentistry

  1. With the consent of the present holder of the Professorship of Conservative Dentistry, established by Statute 69, Chapter V., the said Professorship shall be subject to the provisions of this Chapter.
  2. The Professorship of Conservative Dentistry shall be known as the "Professorship of Restorative Dentistry" All references in these Statutes to the "Professorship of Conservative Dentistry" shall be deemed to be references to the "Professorship of Restorative Dentistry".
  3. The first sentence of Section 3, Chapter V., Statute 69, shall be replaced by the following:

    "3. The duties of the Professor shall be to lecture in Restorative Dentistry under the general direction of the Head of the Department of Restorative Dentistry for all degrees, diplomas and certificates of the University and for all diplomas and certificates of the College. The Professor shall also examine in Restorative Dentistry for the College and, if required by the Senate to do so, for the University."

CHAPTER VI.
Professorship of Restorative Dentistry No. 2

  1. The Professorship of Dental Prosthetics, established by Statute 69, Chapter III., shall be known as the "Professorship of Restorative Dentistry No. 2." All references in these Statutes to the "Professorship of Dental Prosthetics" shall be deemed to be references to the "Professorship of Restorative Dentistry No. 2".
  2. All references in said Statute 69, Chapter III., to "Dental Prosthetics" shall be deemed to be references to "Restorative Dentistry ."

CHAPTER VII.
Lectureship in Restorative Dentistry
Lectureship in Restorative Dentistry No. 2
Lectureship in Restorative Dentistry No. 3

  1. The Lectureship in Conservative Dentistry, established by Statute 72, Chapter II., shall be known as the "Lectureship in Restorative Dentistry". All references in these Statutes to the "Lectureship in Conservative Dentistry" shall be deemed to be references to the "Lectureship in Restorative Dentistry".
  2. The Lectureship in Conservative Dentistry No. 2, established by Statute 131, Chapter III., shall be known as the "Lectureship in Restorative Dentistry No. 2". All references in these Statutes to the "Lectureship in Conservative Dentistry No. 2" shall be deemed to be references to the "Lectureship in Restorative Dentistry No. 2".
  3. The Lectureship in Dental Prosthetics, established by Statute 131, Chapter V., shall be known as the "Lectureship in Restorative Dentistry No. 3". All references in these Statutes to the "Lectureship in Dental Prosthetics" shall be deemed to be references to the "Lectureship in Restorative Dentistry No. 3".
  4. All references to "Conservative Dentistry" in Statute 72, Chapter II., and in Statute 131, Chapter III, and to "Dental Prosthetics" in Statute 131, Chapter V., shall be deemed to be references to "Restorative Dentistry".

CHAPTER VIII.
Certain Posts in Clinical Dental Subjects

The references in Statute 163, Chapter 1., to

shall respectively be deemed to be references to

CHAPTER IX.
Professorship of Analytical Chemistry

  1. There shall be established in the College in the event of its institution by the National University of Ireland, a Professorship of Analytical Chemistry.
  2. The said Professorship shall be in the Department of Chemistry and shall be a full-time office within the meaning of the Statutes of the College and of the University. The stipend of the said Professorship shall be the same as that provided in Statute 132, Chapter I., Section 4(a), as amended.
  3. The duties of the Professor shall be to lecture in Chemistry, including Analytical Chemistry, under the general direction of the Head of the Department of Chemistry, for all degrees, diplomas and certificates of the University and for all diplomas and certificates of the College. The Professor shall also examine in Chemistry, including Analytical Chemistry, for the College and, if required by the Senate to do so, for the University. He/she shall, in addition, discharge such others duties appropriate to the office as shall be assigned by the Head of the Department of Chemistry.
  4. The said Professorship shall be a pensionable office to which the provisions of Statute 79, as amended, and the Pension Scheme annexed thereto, as amended, shall apply.

CHAPTER X.
Professorship of Biochemistry

  1. The provisions of this Chapter shall henceforth apply to the Professorship of Biochemistry established by Statute 43, Chapter II, Section 1.
  2. On the next appointment to the Professorship of Biochemistry the said Professor shall be Head of the Department of Biochemistry for a period of at least five years. In the event of the Governing Body determining, by the making of a Statute or Regulation or otherwise, that new arrangements shall apply to the appointment of the Head of the Department of Biochemistry, the holder of the said Professorship shall thenceforth have the obligation of acting as the Head of the Department of Biochemistry for such period or periods as the Governing Body may decide.

CHAPTER XI.
Lectureship in Medicine No. 4

  1. There shall be established in the College, in the event of its institution by the National University of Ireland, a Lectureship in Medicine No. 4.
  2. The said Lectureship shall be in the Department of Medicine and shall be a full-time office within the meaning of the Statutes of the College and of the University. The term "full-time" in this case shall not be interpreted as precluding the holder of the Lectureship from holding and receiving a stipend in respect of a full-time appointment of the kind specified in Section 6 of this Chapter.
  3. The stipend of the Lectureship shall be determined by the Governing Body so as to provide that the total of the stipend paid by the College and the salary payable in respect of an appointment of the kind specified in Section 6, shall not exceed IR£65,805.   4. The duties of the Lecturer shall be to lecture in Medicine, under the direction of the Head of the Department of Medicine, for all degrees, diplomas and certificates of the University and for all diplomas and certificates of the College. The Lecturer shall also examine in Medicine for the College and, if required by the Senate to do so, for the University. He/she shall, in addition, discharge such other duties appropriate to the office as shall be assigned to him/her by the said Head of the Department of Medicine.
  5. The said Lectureship shall be a permanent office to which the provisions of Statute 79, as amended, and the Pension Scheme annexed thereto, as amended, shall apply.
  6. The said Lectureship shall be tenable only by a member of the medical staff of the teaching hospital recognised by the College and the University in which the Professor of Medicine has, as of right, the control of the adequate teaching or professional unit of beds, both male and female, and is the medical practitioner in charge and where the holder of the Lectureship has been appointed to assist the said Professor.

CHAPTER XII.
Part-time Lectureship in Education
- Director of Adult and Continuing Education

  1. There shall be established in the College, in the event of its institution by the National University of Ireland, a part-time Lectureship in Education.
  2. The holder of the part-time Lectureship shall be the holder of the post of Director of Adult and Continuing Education in the College and shall hold office for as long as he/she holds the said post of Director.
  3. A stipend shall not be payable in respect of the part-time lectureship and it shall not be a pensionable office.
  4. The duties of the Lecturer shall be to lecture in Education, under the direction of the Head of the Department of Education for all degrees, diplomas and certificates of the University and for all diplomas and certificates of the College. The Lecturer shall examine in Education for the College and, if required by the Senate to do so, for the University. He/she shall, in addition discharge such other duties appropriate to the office as shall be assigned by the said Head of the Department of Education.

CHAPTER XIII.
Part-time Lectureship - Director of the Language Centre

  1. There shall be established in the College, in the event of its institution by the National University of Ireland, a part-time Lectureship (untitled) in the Faculty, Department and subject which shall be assigned as the Governing Body shall decide.
  2. The holder of the part-time Lectureship shall be the holder of the post of Director of the Language Centre in the College and shall hold office for as long as he/she holds the said post of Director.
  3. An additional stipend shall not be payable in respect of the said part-time Lectureship and it shall not be a pensionable office.
  4. The duties of the Lecturer shall be to lecture in the assigned subject, under the direction of the Head of the assigned Department, as determined by the Governing Body. The Lecturer shall examine in the assigned subject for the College and, if required by the Senate to do so, for the University. He/she shall, in addition, discharge such other duties appropriate to the office as shall be assigned by the Head of Department.

CHAPTER XIV.

The Professorships and Lectureships hereby established shall, subject to the provisions contained in this Statute, be tenable for the same term and upon the same conditions and the holder thereof shall be subject to the same duties and obligations as if the said Professorships had been included in Statute 1 to 165 of University College, Cork.

CHAPTER XV.

  1. This Statute shall be construed with and as part of Statutes 1 -165 of University College, Cork and may be cited as Statute 166 of University College, Cork or Stat. 166 of Univ. Coll. Cork.
  2. This Statute will come into operation on the fourteenth day of December, 1993.
