Evening Law Degree



CK 301: BCL (Hons) (Bachelor of  Law)

Selection criteria for admittance of Mature Students to the BCL degree are based on the information provided on the candidate's application form and an assessment test.  The determining criteria will be the candidate's ability to demonstrate:

  • aptitude for legal study and likelihood of successful completion of the course. 

Factors which may assist in determining suitability include:

  • Relevant work experience
  • Relevant life experience
  • Absence of previous opportunity to undertake third level education
  • Other educational qualification

The Assessment Test will consist of two sections designed to test the candidate's:

  • Impressions and appraisal of the law and the legal system
  • Capacity to analyse and reason in the context of a hypothetical situation

No previous legal knowledge is required to complete either section of the test.

Candidates may also be required to attend for interview.

The study of law is a full-time occupation which requires a full-time commitment from students. The school is supportive of mature students and has a mentoring system in place in which all students are allocated a specific member of academic staff whom they can consult for help and advice when necessary.

CK 302: BCL (Hons) with French

As for CK301 with Leaving certificate standard in French.

As part of the selection process, and in addition to the assessment process of the School of Law, the language departments may conduct their own interviews/assessements to ascertain adequate language competence in French.

Evening Law Degree

The four-year cycle of UCC's long-established Evening Law Degree will commence in September 2011. 

A Diploma in Law (Dip.L) is awarded to all who successfully complete the first two years of study and students may complete their studies at this point. In practice, however, the vast majority of students complete the BCL degree programme over a further two years.

The evening programme will be of interest to those who wish:

  • To enhance career prospects in existing employment.
  • To enhance possibilities of undertaking a new career.
  • To acquire knowledge of and insight into the application of law in business, current affairs and society generally.

Applicants must be aged 21 years on or before January 1st in the proposed year of entry. Entry is limited and will be subject to a selection process. Please note that Evening Law students will not be permitted to pursue concurrently any other programme in University College Cork. Information regarding the School of Law can be found at www.ucc.ie/law/.

Application for the evening degree programme is made directly through the Admissions Office, UCC.  The closing date for the receipt of applications is Thursday March 31st 2011.
