31 Years of Maths Enrichment
A record 260 students from secondary schools across the Cork area have registered to participate in the UCC Mathematics Enrichment programme 2018-2019.
Students attend classes at Junior, Intermediate and Senior Advanced level. Mathematics Enrichment participants work in a relaxed, playful environment where they meet new ideas and activities designed to deepen their interest in the subject. Emphasis is placed on creative thinking and problem-solving skills.
The programme would not exist without the contributions of UCC mathematicians who give off their time to deliver the classes every Saturday: Arundhathi Krishnan, Philipp Hoevel, Tom Carroll, Michael Cronin, David Henry, Cónall Kelly, Claus Koestler, Ben McKay, Anca and Andrei Mustata from UCC. David Goulding, acting head of the CIT department of mathematics, continues his long-term valuable contribution to the programme. Declan Manning, a former UCC Maths Enrichment participant and a Masters graduate of the University of Oxford, brings infectious enthusiasm every week, while PhD student Jacob Bennett-Woolf works tirelessly to support the programme at academic and administrative levels.
In addition, a dedicated collective of undergraduate tutors carry on the Junior and the Intermediate programmes: Cliona Allen, Christopher Brennan, Ciaran Daly, Sean Pablo Daudet, Desmond Doran, Reginald Peter Kavanagh, Paolo Lamadrid, Conor McCarthy, David McMahon, Dylan Morley, Billy Michael Millar, Fergal O'Connor, Diarmuid O'Donoghue, Alison Amy Riordan, Sarah Christine Tyner, Lev Udaltsov.
The UCC Mathematics Enrichment enrichment programme, now in its 31st year, was started by Prof. Finbarr Holland and Donal Hurley, with the support of members of the Mathematics Department at UCC. It is currently coordinated by Anca Mustata with administrative support of the School.
