European and Business Law Network

The European and Business Law Network at the School of Law at University College Cork provides a platform for research and dissemination of knowledge amongst scholars in the School of Law who have shared interests in many aspects of the European Union. This research covers all aspects of European Union law from administrative law to business and rights-based issues.

The network is as inclusive as possible. With its primary focus on the European Union, it allows us to interact with scholars across Europe and with scholars in other parts of the globe as we present ourselves as coming from a common law jurisdiction firmly placed within a broader European regulatory landscape. With the imminence of BREXIT Ireland’s identification as a common law system within Europe and the Eurozone is all the more compelling.

The functions of the European and Business Law Network are

  • To provide a platform for the enhancement of current research strengths in this intellectual space as part of the identity of the School of Law at University College Cork.
  • To provide a network for collaboration amongst existing researchers, including early-stage researchers and to engage proactively with European calls for funded research.
  • To engage with other research centres at the School of Law with similar interests.
  • To maximise our engagement with scholars internationally.
  • To maximise our engagement with policymakers both nationally and internationally
  • To interact proactively with curriculum development in the School of Law, in particular, to support taught and research postgraduate programmes such as the LLM (Business Law), the LLM (Research) and all programmes up to doctoral level. We also inform the development of our undergraduate programmes including BCL (Law and Business) and BCL (Law and French) and other BCL programmes. For example, at present, we are aware of increased demand for lawyer linguists in the EU, and for increased need for specialised knowledge in information and intellectual property law and we will support the development of the curriculum in these areas.
