Martin O'Driscoll, UCC Library

Martin was nominated by Ann Byrne and Alan Carbery, on behalf of UCC Library. Below, they share why Martin is so deserving of this acknowledgement.

“Martin led UCC Library’s involvement in a national initiative to 3-D print PPE for healthcare workers working in the fight against COVID-19. Through various voluntary initiatives he is involved in within the community, Martin was aware of the difficulties which hospitals in Cork were having with the delivery of face masks and other personal protective equipment.

Through a partnership with Benchspace Cork, he added UCC Library to a network of like-minded individuals, to print PPE face shields for frontline healthcare workers until industrial production could address the need. Martin set up a clean space in his home and used the Library 3-D printer for the project.

Martin volunteers for Blood Bike South which transports blood, blood products, patient records, drugs and other medical requirements between public hospitals and blood transfusion banks, primarily but not exclusively in the Southern Region. Martin used this experience with Blood Bike South and his network of contacts to develop a nationwide logistics infrastructure to collect printed frames and deliver supplies to the over 300 printers.

By project end, over 50,000 face shields had been produced, collected and delivered; 480 printed by Martin and the library printer. The overall national efforts also resulted in a fund-raising effort and was successful in raising €54,000 in support of the initiative.

UCC Library is very proud of Martin and the ongoing work he does with Blood Bike South, and for his huge part in the success of the Face Shield project.”
