Developing Your Career: an action oriented approach 

Overview: This new programme which takes an action oriented approach is designed to provide individuals with career awareness, self development and career decision making skills

Programme Objectives: 

This workshop aims to:

  • Assist individuals in identifying their career priorities
  • Understand what career security is and the actions necessary to develop career security
  • Enable individuals to develop a realistic understanding of themselves with regard to unique abilities, interests & aptitudes
  • Review the changing environment and work place competencies for the 21st Century
  • Provide individuals with the necessary tools to assist in making appropriate career choices and plans

Aims

Is your career on track or do you feel like you need a clearer sense of purpose and direction? Does your career strategy fit with your current personal goals or has it become dated? Do you have people who can support you in your career development?

This workshop will give you the opportunity to assess your skills and expertise in relation to your current or future job requirements and to identity appropriate training and other developmental experiences. This course will provide you with the space, information and tools to start working immediately on planning the next phase in your career with confidence and enthusiasm. 

It will also provide you with the opportunity to meet with and learn from at least two successful role models.

Topics covered will include:

  • The importance of self-knowledge – where you are and where you want to be
  • Identifying who can help you in your career
  • The hidden tactics needed to succeed in any career
  • Creative job hunting

At the end of this course, participants will be able to:

  • Develop a personal career strategy using an in-depth “SWOT” analysis
  • Gain confidence and a direction through an awareness of their key strengths
  • Match competencies and  career preferences to selection and promotion criteria
  • Identify key people who will support or mentor them in their career
  • Raise their profile in the organisation and beyond
  • Identify and access internal and external career development opportunities
  • Set manageable objectives and be prepared to revise these plans if circumstances change

This course is a combination of presenter input, group discussions, and individual and group exercises.

Aims

In today’s workplace, the standard of your written application can have a significant bearing on your career and job prospects. Your CV is your personal marketing brochure. This practical, interactive course outlines general principles of effective, written applications. Participants will have an opportunity to analyse CVs and application forms from the recruiter’s point of view, get feedback on individual applications and have the opportunity to review a current application of their own. Confidence is vital to interview success and this course aims to give you the confidence you need by demonstrating everything you need to know about interview preparation and performance.

Objectives

By the end of the course, participants will be able to:

  • Tailor their CVs, cover letters and application forms to the needs of prospective employers
  • Market their skills and experience to prospective employers
  • Access a broader range of employment opportunities
  • Maximise their likelihood of being short-listed for interview
  • Prepare thoroughly for any interview
  • Project confidence through body language, voice and appearance
  • Identify personal strengths and how to articulate them
  • Remain enthusiastic and composed during the interview
  • Use every interview as an opportunity to grow in confidence and skill

Optional Extra: Individual CV Consultation for Administrative, Technical and Services Staff

Participants who have attended the CVs, Job Applications and Interviews workshopmay avail of the opportunity to have their CV reviewed individually by Careers Advisers.

Review Duration: 30 minutes (to be arranged by the Career Services)

The format of this session is one to one coaching with an experienced professional and with the opportunity to receive immediate feedback.


Optional Extra: Practice Interviews for Administrative, Technical and Services Staff

Participants who have attended the CVs, Applications and Interviews Workshop may avail of the opportunity to have a practice interview and receive feedback on their performance. Sessions are focussed on perfecting your performance and confidence for your next interview.

Interview Duration: 30 minutes (to be arranged by the Career Services)

Interviewers: Career Services Staff

The format of the session is that participants will be organised into groups of three and have an opportunity to rotate their roles and be interviewed by an interview panel, to sit on the interview panel and view the experience from the interviewers’ perspective and to observe two interviews. Feedback will be delivered at the end of the session.

Retirement Planning: Financial Aspects
