Research Positions in Biochemistry
One postdoctoral researcher, one research assistant (MSc grade) and one PhD student positions are available to work on a new interdisciplinary project funded by the Science Foundation of Ireland for four years starting from September 2008. The project is focused on the development of new spectroscopic techniques for monitoring intracellular oxygen and applying them to the studies of metabolism and physiological responses of mammalian cells. The project will employ a range of state of the art techniques including live cell imaging, oxygen sensing, in vitro bioassays (cell and receptor based), fluorescent probes, conventional cell and molecular biology techniques, gene expression analysis. It will also involve collaboration with several leading groups in neuroscience and hypoxia research.
The successful candidates will join the dynamic team of the Biophysics and Bioanalysis lab, Biochemistry Department, UCC. The lab is accommodated in the new Cavanagh Pharmacy Building on UCC campus, fully equipped with advanced instrumentation, has well-developed infrastructure and proven record of publications and research accomplishments.
Suitably qualified candidates must have good, hands-on laboratory skills, working knowledge of mammalian cell culture, cell metabolism and bioenergetics, cell and molecular biology techniques, biomolecular spectroscopy and/or analytical biochemistry. The candidates should be enthusiastic, able to learn and acquire new techniques, detail-oriented, well organised and have excellent personal skills. Previous experience in related areas of research and good engineering and computing skills are preferred. Attractive salary will commensurate with qualification.
