  • Thursday 16th January 4.30pm: Professor Bill Lawson, ‘Frederick Douglass and the Irish Famine: Music, Suffering, and the Sorrow Songs’

Bill Lawson is Distinguished Professor of Philosophy at the University of Memphis. He is the co-editor of Pragmatism and the Politics of Race (Indiana, 2004) and of Frederick Douglass: A Critical Reader (Blackwell, 1999)

  • Friday 17th January, 5pm: Professor Patrick Geoghegan (Trinity College Dublin): ‘Daniel O’Connell, Ireland, and the Anti-Slavery Movement’

Patrick Geoghegan is Associate Professor of History at Trinity College Dublin. He is the author of Liberator: the life and death of Daniel O’Connell (Gill and Macmillan, 2010), and of Dan: the rise of Daniel O’Connell (Gill and Macmillan, 2008)

 

  • Friday 24th January, 4.30pm: Sorcha Fox will discuss and perform extracts from Donal O’Kelly’s play The Cambria (about Frederick Douglass’s 1845 voyage to Ireland and its present-day implications), and the reception of the play in Ireland, the U.S., and Zimbabwe.

Sorcha Fox is an award-winning writer, director and performer. Voted Best Actress at the New York Irish Festival in 2011, Sorcha directed an award-winning production of Donal O’Kelly’s ‘Jimmy Joyced’ in 2004. She writes for television, and has performed in O’Kelly’s acclaimed two-hander The Cambria in Ireland, the US, and Africa.
