As Ireland continues to descend into economic decline with potentially dire consequences for the humanities, the Ad Fontes project offers a retrospective view of a period of crisis in early-modern Ireland when a thriving intellectual culture was overthrown and almost written out of history by an insurgent political elite under the rubric of reform and modernisation.

Dr. Harris will focus upon the extent to which the latest European Renaissance ideals had developed in Irelandprior to this reversal of fortune and will examine why they appear not to have put down firm roots. At the core of this talk is a consideration of the relationship of the humanities to educational policy and state ideology, both past and present.
