Dr. habil. Laurențiu-Mihai Ștefan took office as Ambassador of Romania to Ireland on August 16, 2021. Laurenţiu-Mihai Ştefan is a graduate of the University of Bucharest’s Faculty of Political Sciences (1996). He holds an MPhil in Politics and Sociology of Modern Societies from the University of Cambridge, UK, (1998), and a PhD in political science from the SNSPA, Bucharest (2003). His doctoral dissertation focused on the recruitment of political elites in post-communist Romania. He was a fellow of the Institute of Human Sciences in Vienna (2000), and of the New Europe College in Bucharest (1999-2002).

Before assuming diplomatic responsibilities, Dr. Ștefan served as Senior Presidential Adviser for Domestic Political Affairs of Romanian President, Klaus Iohannis. Dr. Laurenţiu-Mihai Ştefan has previously worked for the U.S. Embassy in Bucharest as Senior Political Specialist (2004-2015). Between 1998 and 2000, he was one of the senior political analysts at Mediafax, the most important Romanian news agency.

Currently, Dr. Laurențiu-Mihai Ștefan is Associate Professor at the Faculty of Political Science, National University of Political Science and Public Administration (SNSPA). Since 2002, Dr. Laurenţiu-Mihai Ştefan has contributed to many European research projects, on government coalitions, on parliamentary and ministerial elites. He edited the Dictionary of Major Political Writings (in Romanian, Humanitas, 2000) and authored (in English) the volumes Patterns of Political Elite Recruitment in Post-Communist Romania (Ziua, 2004) and Who Governs Romania? Profiles of Political Elites before and after 1989 (ISPRI, 2012). He contributed to many edited volumes, including The Contested Status of Political Elites. At the Crossroads (Routledge, 2019), Coalition Governance in Central Eastern Europe (Oxford University Press, 2019), and Prime Ministers and Party Governments in Central and Eastern Europe (Routledge, 2023, in print). He also authored or co-authored articles in Communist and Post-Communist Studies, East European Politics, Problems of Post-Communism, and Journal of Legislative Studies, among others.
