Overview

APC Microbiome Ireland (APC) is a world-leading Science Foundation Ireland Research Centre based in University College Cork focused on understanding the role that the gut microbiota plays in human health and disease. The microbiome has become one of the most dynamic, complex and exciting areas of research in both food and pharmaceutical arenas. Since its inception in 2003, the APC has established itself as one of the leading and largest global centres in human microbiome research. The APC has made several landmark discoveries and has published over 3,000 research articles in peer-reviewed journals, generating many journal covers and associated editorials. The APC is a seamless collaboration of 300 researchers, managers and support staff distributed across UCC, Teagasc, University of Galway, Trinity College Dublin, and various other academic institutions across the country. It’s core research pillars are:

  • Microbes to Molecules: mining the microbiome for novel pharmabiotics
  • Diet & Microbes with a focus on early life and elderly
  • Microbiota-Brain-Gut axis
  • Host-Microbe Dialogue

A fifth pillar relating to Microbiomes and Sustainable Agri-Food Production is also in planning.

The APC seeks two talented and motivated candidates with strong research credentials whose research activities and interests align with any of the APC’s core research pillars outlined above. The successful candidates will develop research and teaching programmes at the interface of microbiome and health and join the highly-performing APC Investigator team, 13 of whom were included in the Clarivate 2021 Highly Cited Researchers list.

In particular we welcome applications from candidates with expertise in fields such as mucosal immunology, neuro-inflammation, biostatistics and AI model development, cancer and the microbiome, environmental microbiomes and their relationship to human and animal health as well as food production.

Candidates will be expected to be competitive for ERC and other prestigious EU/International funding awards, to collaborate with industry, become involved with the APC’s education and public engagement programme of activities, and to be committed to translating excellent science for the benefit of society.

This position is being filled as part of UCC Futures - Food, Microbiome and Health.

Duties and Responsibilities

In accordance with the University’s strategic objective as a research led institution, the duties of all academic staff will include research, research-led teaching and contributions to the university, the discipline and the community. The academic staff member shall teach and examine, undertake administrative duties and carry out other duties appropriate to the post under the general direction of the Director of the APC, as well as the Head of the relevant academic School or Department.

The roles and responsibilities outlined below are to be interpreted in the context of the relevant Statutes and where there is any difference arising from interpretation, that statutory provisions take precedent. For the sake of clarity, the relevant elements of the statutes not already incorporated in the numbered sections are appended in italics under each subheading.

Teaching and Examining | Research | Contributions

Teaching and Examining

  1. Contribute to and assist in the delivery of research led teaching, assessment and examining on courses at undergraduate and postgraduate level and where appropriate adult and continuing education courses;
  2. Supervise research projects for undergraduate and postgraduate programmes;
  3. Undertake the development and regular evaluation of modules with reference to content, delivery and assessment;
  4. Participate in the development of new curricular initiatives;
  5. Demonstrate excellence in teaching and learning and apply innovative teaching and learning methodologies
  6. Contribute towards the maintenance of academic standards within his/her discipline.
  • to give the students attending his/her ordinary lectures assistance in their studies, by advice, by informal instruction, by occasional and periodic examination, and otherwise, as s/he may judge to be expedient;
  • also, to make such arrangements as s/he sees fit to make to meet students who have individual queries;
  • to give instruction to his/her students and assist them in the pursuit of knowledge
  • to hold, or assist at, all University examinations in the subjects with which s/he is an examiner;

Research

  1. Contribute as an Independent Investigator to research excellence, capacity building and interdisciplinary research in APC Microbiome Ireland and through the UCC Futures: Food, Microbiome and Health initiative
  2. Engage in productive research and scholarship and contribute to the advancement of knowledge, participate in research activities and publish the research in appropriate peer-reviewed publications, creative works or other forms of scholarship appropriate to the discipline;
  3. Engage in collaborative research with industry and with international academic collaborators through EU-funded consortia and other international research programmes;
  4. Supervise postgraduate research students (particularly PhD students);
  5. Undertake initiatives in generating research income as appropriate to the discipline;
  6. Engage in other scholarly activities relevant to the research discipline.

Contributions

  1. Participate in the administrative activities of the department/school and the academic life of the College and University;
  2. Act as a member of such committees as may be required by the University;
  3. Develop links with professional bodies and external agencies, where appropriate;
  4. Serve as a spokesperson and champion for UCC Futures: Food, Microbiome and Health strategic areas of excellence;
  5. Promote the discipline both inside and outside the University and contribute to the overall intellectual life of the University and society;
  6. Carry out other duties appropriate to the post as may be assigned by the head of discipline/department/school.
  • to carry out administrative and other appropriate duties lawfully allocated to them within their department or other academic unit;
  • if a member of the Academic Council, to attend its meetings;
  • to serve upon all the committees to which s/he may be appointed by the Governing Body or the Academic Council, and to assist and co-operate with the Governing Body in such other reasonable ways as the Governing Body may prescribe, for the maintenance of discipline and good conduct among the students, or for the general business of the University;

Qualifications

  1. A PhD or equivalent qualification in a discipline that is relevant to the field of microbiome sciences (in its broadest sense) including, but not limited to, microbiology, neuroscience, biological science, natural science, and computational biology.
  2. A track record of research and publication in the area of microbiome sciences.

Teaching and Examining

  1. Relevant teaching experience or evidence of teaching potential;
  2. An ability to contribute across a range of undergraduate and postgraduate teaching programmes both in and outside the area of research specialisation;
  3. Evidence of a commitment to excellence in research led teaching;
  4. Evidence of an understanding of and willingness to use modern teaching technologies and potential for innovative teaching and curriculum development;
  5. Evidence of an ability to teach, inspire and supervise students, communicate ideas and concepts in a teaching and learning environment.

Research

  1. Evidence of appropriate research achievement as indicated by published work and other research outputs appropriate to the discipline
  2. Potential to attract funding through competitive research grants or other sources as relevant
  3. Experience of or potential for research supervision (particularly PhD students)
  4. Evidence of other relevant scholarly activity
  5. Ability and willingness to collaborate with colleagues on research projects, as appropriate to the discipline

Contributions

  1. Administrative experience or evidence of ability to contribute to academic administration
  2. Experience in or potential to participate in relevant academic and professional associations/bodies as appropriate
  3. The potential to participate in and contribute to the overall intellectual life of the University, the academic discipline and society at large;

Salary Information

Appointment may be made on the Lecturer Salary Scale: €37,168 - €65,127 (Below the bar, Scale B) / €71,178 - €92,180 (Above the bar, Scale B) / €39,156 - €61,971 (Below the bar, Scale A) / €67,721 - €87,570 (Above the bar, Scale A)
 
Salary placement on appointment will be in accordance with public sector pay policy.
