Lecturer in Education (Gaeilge)


Permanent Whole-time Post

UCC wishes to appoint an experienced academic to the role of Lecturer in Education (Gaeilge). Reporting to the Head of School, the appointee will contribute to teaching and learning on the B.Ed. Gaeilge (with another Language or Mathematics) programme and across the School of Education more widely. In addition, the appointee will be expected to engage in research supervision and scholarly activity. This is a unique opportunity to join a dynamic and innovative School with a vibrant research culture that supports a large number of undergraduate and postgraduate students.

Essential criteria includes: a Masters in Education (or relevant cognate area) or significant progress towards a PhD in Education; a teaching qualification recognised by the Teaching Council of Ireland; fluency in the Irish language; experience of teaching Irish or another Modern European language in a classroom setting; evidence of developing research scholarship and publication; proven teaching excellence; proven administrative experience; excellent interpersonal skills; and the ability to build relations and work collaboratively.

Duties of the post

In accordance with the University’s strategic objective as a research-led institution, the duties of all academic staff will include research, research-led teaching and contributions to the university, the discipline and the community. The academic staff member shall teach and examine, undertake administrative duties and carry out other duties appropriate to the post under the general direction of the Head of the School of Education.

The appointee to this role will contribute to teaching and learning on the BEd Gaeilge (with another Language or Mathematics) programme and across the School of Education more widely. In addition, the appointee will be expected to engage in research supervision and scholarly activity.

The roles and responsibilities outlined below are to be interpreted in the context of the relevant Statutes and where there is any difference arising from interpretation, that statutory provisions take precedent. For the sake of clarity, the relevant elements of the statutes not already incorporated in the numbered sections are appended in italics under each subheading.

Teaching and Examining

  1. Contribute to and assist in the delivery of research-led teaching, assessment and examining on courses at undergraduate and postgraduate level and where appropriate adult and continuing education programmes;
  2. Supervise research projects for undergraduate and postgraduate programmes;
  3. Undertake the development and regular evaluation of modules with reference to content, delivery and assessment;
  4. Participate in the development of new curricular initiatives;
  5. Demonstrate excellence in teaching and learning and apply innovative teaching and learning methodologies within the School of Education and within other academic units in the University, as appropriate;
  6. Contribute towards the maintenance of academic standards within their discipline:
  • to give the students attending his/her ordinary lectures assistance in their studies, by advice, by informal instruction, by occasional and periodic examination, and otherwise, as they may judge to be expedient; also, to make such arrangements as s/he sees fit to make to meet students who have individual queries;
  • to give instruction to their students and assist them in the pursuit of knowledge;
  • to hold, or assist at, all University examinations in the subjects with which they are an examiner.



  1. Engage in productive research and scholarship and contribute to the advancement of knowledge, participate in research activities and publish the research in appropriate peer-reviewed publications, creative works or other forms of scholarship appropriate to the discipline;
  2. Supervise postgraduate research students (particularly PhD students);
  3. Undertake initiatives in generating research income as appropriate to the discipline;
  4. Engage in other scholarly activities relevant to the research discipline.



  1. Participate in the administrative activities of the department/school and the academic life of the College and University;
  2. Act as a member of such committees as may be required by the University;
  3. Develop links with professional bodies and external agencies, where appropriate;
  4. Promote the discipline both inside and outside the University and contribute to the overall intellectual life of the University and society;
  5. Carry out other duties appropriate to the post as may be assigned by the head of discipline/department/school:
  • to carry out administrative and other appropriate duties lawfully allocated to them within their department or other academic unit;
  • if a member of the Academic Council, to attend its meetings;
  • to serve upon all the committees to which s/he may be appointed by the Governing Body or the Academic Council, and to assist and co-operate with the Governing Body in such other reasonable ways as the Governing Body may prescribe, for the maintenance of discipline and good conduct among the students, or for the general business of the University.

All staff are required to be flexible, co-operative and professional within the needs of the post and the Discipline/Department/School, College and University. The University is undertaking a major reform of its internal structures which may necessitate possible future changes in the organisation of its activities.

  1. A masters in Education (or in a relevant related cognate area) or significant progress made towards a doctorate in Education or equivalent professional qualification;
  2. A teaching qualification recognised by the Teaching Council of Ireland.


Teaching and Examining

Essential Criteria

  1. Proficient user of the Irish language across all language competences (oral interaction and production, listening, reading and writing skills);
  2. Experience of teaching Irish and/or Modern European Languages to the highest level in the school system;
  3. An expertise and in-depth understanding of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFRL) and in CEFRL aligned language teaching methodologies and assessments;
  4. Familiarity with and experience of immersion-specific pedagogies;
  5. A background in, affinity with and experience of teaching specific post-primary school curriculum subjects supported by the BEd programme and the School of Education (e.g. Irish, English, Mathematics, History, Geography, French, German, Spanish, Italian, Music, Business Studies, Religious Education, Science);
  6. Familiarity with and experience of the Irish educational system and the cultures of Irish schools;
  7. Evidence of a commitment to excellence in research-led language teaching and an ability to model effective language pedagogical practice to all students, especially student teachers;
  8. Familiarity with the current policy and curriculum context of education in Ireland at all levels, from primary and post-primary to initial teacher education;
  9. Evidence of an ability to teach, tutor and inspire students, communicate ideas and concepts meaningfully and offer appropriate student feedback in a university teaching and learning environment;
  10. An ability to contribute across a range of education programmes both in and outside any specific area of educational and research specialisation;
  11. Evidence of an understanding of and willingness to use digital technologies to enhance learning experiences and the potential for innovative teaching and curriculum design and development.

Desirable Criteria

  1. Proficient user of one or more Modern European language(s) (French, German, Spanish or Italian) across all language competences (oral interaction and production, listening, reading and writing skills) or proficiency in Mathematics;
  2. Experience of working in initial teacher education;
  3. Experience of working with student teachers; especially supporting students on school placement;
  4. Experience of designing and delivering modules and programmes to language teachers and/or student teachers.



Essential Criteria

  1. Evidence of appropriate research achievement as indicated by published work and other research outputs appropriate to the discipline of language teaching and education;
  2. A demonstrated understanding of theoretical principles and national and international research findings which form the basis for second/target/minority language learning, teaching and assessment in immersion education;
  3. Potential to attract funding through competitive research grants or other sources as relevant;
  4. Experience of or potential for research supervision at all levels;
  5. Evidence of relevant educational scholarly activity at the applicant’s level (e.g., contribution to local, national and international educational research, policy, publications);
  6. Ability and willingness to collaborate with colleagues on research projects and initiatives, as appropriate to the discipline of Education.

Desirable Criteria

  1. Administrative experience or evidence of leadership in university, college, school, or other educational settings;
  2. Experience in or potential to participate in relevant academic and professional associations/bodies as appropriate;
  3. Contribution to national profile educational work through evidence of engagement with relevant statutory and other national representative bodies e.g. Teaching Council, NCCA, SEC, DES, School Inspectorate, ETBs, COGG, Gaeloideachas, JMB, NAPD.

  6. Willingness and ability to tutor and support students on school placement;
  7. Willingness and ability to travel to all school placement sites with which the School of Education works cooperatively.

The University, at its discretion, may undertake to make an additional appointment(s) from this competition following the conclusion of the process.

Salary Information

Appointment may be made on the Lecturer (below the bar) Scale €37,912 - €66,429 (Scale B) / €39,939 - €63,211 (Scale A).
Salary placement on appointment will be in accordance with public sector pay policy.
