UCC wishes to appoint to the role of Professor of Digital Microelectronics and Embedded System Design in the School of Engineering and Architecture (Discipline of Electrical and Electronic Engineering). This is a unique opportunity for a candidate of international standing to lead the development of Microelectronics and Embedded Systems Engineering research within the School of Engineering, and to engage with a major industry partner in doing so.
 
The Professor will lead internationally competitive research activities in one or both of the following areas:

  • Digital Circuits and Systems
  • Electronic Embedded Systems

Reporting to the Head of the School of Engineering and Architecture, the Professor will also provide academic leadership in microelectronics, including strong research led teaching, enhancing collaborative links between the School of Engineering and key industry partners, and giving leadership support to the development of educational initiatives within the Electrical and Electronic Engineering discipline.

What is UCC Futures – Artificial Intelligence & Data Analytics?

The staggering expansion and influence of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Data Analytics in our daily lives is a defining feature of the 21st century. With a complementary relationship, AI and Data Analytics are rapidly becoming two of the most important technologies in the world today. Their impact is transformational, disrupting society and industry alike. Over the last decade alone, the availability of vast amounts of digital data, the availability of powerful computing architectures, and advances in AI techniques such as machine learning have led to major advances across multiple sectors. There have been significant AI-enabled and data driven developments in smart manufacturing, autonomous vehicles, healthcare, home/service robots, education, cybersecurity, to name but a few.

Fundamental scientific advances in automated reasoning, Boolean satisfiability, and complex problem solving, have brought within reach a variety of intractable AI tasks that arise in scheduling, diagnosis, model-based reasoning, security, verification, and planning. Building on the legacy of Professor George Boole at University College Cork, UCC Futures – AI & Data Analytics promotes interdisciplinary collaboration at the cutting edge of AI and Data Analytics.

Duties of the post

In accordance with the University’s strategic objective as a research led institution, the duties of all academic staff will include research, research-led teaching and contributions to the university, the discipline and the community.

The academic staff member shall teach and examine, undertake administrative duties and carry out other duties appropriate to the post, under the general direction of the Head of the School of Engineering and Architecture. In particular, they will undertake leading research into digital Microelectronics and Embedded Systems Design resulting from a strong interaction with companies, national and international partners as appropriate. The successful appointee will also proactively engage with industry.

The roles and responsibilities outlined below are to be interpreted in the context of the relevant Statutes and where there is any difference arising from interpretation, statutory provisions take precedent. For the sake of clarity, the relevant elements of the statutes not already incorporated in the numbered sections are appended in italics under each subheading.

Leadership | ResearchTeaching & Examining | Contributions

Leadership

  1. Demonstrate academic leadership in the development of digital Microelectronic Engineering and Embedded Systems in UCC through research, teaching, and scholarship, and in any other appropriate manner, including through industry interaction;
  2. Mentor, support, inspire and advise staff, including in particular junior staff, as appropriate and assist in their overall career development in both research and teaching; and furthermore foster the research and scholarship of other individuals and groups within the academic unit, and the University.

 

Research

  1. Engage in internationally competitive research and scholarship and contribute to the advancement of knowledge within their discipline and publish their research in appropriate international peer-reviewed publications, creative works or other forms of scholarship appropriate to the discipline;
  2. Carry out initiatives in generating research income both with industry, and through competitive national and international funding routes focusing on digital microelectronics and/or embedded systems design engineering;
  3. Assist in the co-ordination of research funding activities within the School of Engineering, and/or related Schools and Research Institutes within UCC, focusing on digital microelectronics and/or embedded systems design engineering;
  4. Supervise students undertaking research projects (especially at PhD level);
  5. Engage in other scholarly activities relevant to the discipline.

 

Teaching & Examining

  1. Promote excellence in teaching and learning and encourage the application of innovative teaching and learning methodologies within the School of Engineering and within other academic units in the University, as appropriate;
  2. Teach and examine on courses at undergraduate and postgraduate level and, where appropriate, adult and continuing education courses and make a distinguished personal contribution to teaching at all levels;
  3. Supervise, inspire and encourage undergraduate and postgraduate students;
  4. Contribute to, and take a leadership role where appropriate in, the regular evaluation of curricula, and the development of new curricular initiatives;
  5. Perform a significant role in the development of postgraduate studies at UCC;
  6. Lead in the maintenance of academic standards and in the development of the curriculum within their subject areas;
  • to give the students attending their ordinary lectures assistance in their studies, by advice, by informal instruction, by occasional and periodic examination, and otherwise, as they may judge to be expedient; also, to make such arrangements as they see fit to make to meet students who have individual queries;
  • to give instruction to their students and assist them in the pursuit of knowledge;
  • to hold, or assist at, all University examinations in the subjects with which they are examiner.

 

Contributions

  1. Promote the discipline both inside and outside the University and contribute to the overall intellectual life of the University and society;
  2. Develop and strengthen links between the Discipline and the key industry companies in the Microelectronics and Embedded Systems areas, both within the Cork region and Ireland more generally;
  3. Proactively and constructively interact with industry with a view to developing research, teaching and outreach activities of mutual benefit;
  4. Serve if required as Head of one of the College’s academic units subject to relevant University regulations, statutes and management requirements;
  5. Develop links with professional bodies and external agencies, where appropriate;
  6. Contribute to the administrative duties of the Discipline, School and/or College, and to act as a member of such committees as may be required within the University;
  7. Fulfil other duties appropriate to the post as may be assigned by the Head of Discipline/School;
  8. Carry out other duties as may arise as identified in the University Statutes
  • to carry out administrative and other appropriate duties lawfully allocated to them within their School  or other academic unit;
  • if a member of the Academic Council, to attend its meetings;
  • to serve upon all the committees to which they may be appointed by the Governing Body or the Academic Council, and to assist and co-operate with the Governing Body in such other reasonable ways as the Governing Body may prescribe, for the maintenance of discipline and good conduct among the students, or for the general business of the University.

Essential Criteria

  1. A PhD in digital Microelectronics.

 

Leadership

Essential Criteria

  1. Evidence of ability to lead and inspire a team of researchers producing outcomes of relevant impact;
  2. Ability to provide vision and leadership in the development of the Discipline of Electronic and Microelectronic Engineering, in particular, the development of a research strategy for the area of Digital Microelectronics and Embedded Systems Engineering.

 

Research

Essential Criteria

  1. A strong research track record evidencing an international standing as a leading researcher in Digital Microelectronic and/or Embedded Systems Engineering, as evidenced through a record of high-quality research outputs, including for example peer reviewed publications, patents, international conference invitations and/or other appropriate forms of scholarship;
  2. A significant successful research funding record through industry, and/or government funded awards;
  3. Significant research expertise in digital microelectronic and embedded systems circuit design engineering, with potential to align a research strategy with that of the University, and especially its Futures programme;
  4. Ability and willingness to collaborate with colleagues on research projects, as appropriate to the discipline.

Desirable Criteria

  1. Evidence of international distinctions or recognitions as a leading international scholar in the area.

 

Teaching and Examining

Essential Criteria

  1. Evidence of significant achievement and strong track record in research-led teaching in Microelectronic Engineering and/or close cognate areas, including, if possible, eventual awards received at University or international level;
  2. Evidence of ability to teach, inspire and supervise students, communicate ideas and concepts in a teaching and learning environment; and have developed and led postgraduate supervision to doctorate level.

Desirable Criteria

  1. Evidence of contributions to innovation in teaching and in curriculum or programme development, review and evaluation and the ability to lead the development of new programmes as determined by School and University strategy;
  2. A familiarity with and willingness to use modern teaching technologies.

 

Contributions

Essential Criteria

  1. Proven administrative, organisational and managerial experience in an academic leadership position, or equivalent;
  2. Demonstrated potential to proactively engage with industry to develop mutually beneficial activities in research, teaching and/or outreach activities;
  3. Proven track record of leading, and participating in, outreach activities relating to “STEM”, and Electronic Engineering in particular;
  4. Demonstrated commitment to the long-term development of the Discipline.

Desirable Criteria

  1. Evidence of active participation in relevant academic and professional associations/ bodies as appropriate.

Salary Information

Appointment may be made on the Professor Salary Scale: €140,068 - €177,078 (Scale B) / €133,065 - €171,002 (Scale A).

Salary placement on appointment will be in accordance with public sector pay policy.
