Draft Timetables & Teaching Methods

Semester 1 - Academic Year 2020/2021

Update: Following a Government directive issued 25/09/20, UCC, along with all universities in the country, will introduce enhanced public health protection measures from Monday, 28 September 2020. This means all lectures will be delivered online to the maximum extent possible for a two week period to the 9th October 2020. Labs, practicals and workshops remain unchanged. Please check Canvas and your email for updates from Module Coordinators.

Message from Head of School,

Dear Food and Nutritional Science students,

I hope you and your families are keeping well.

Following on from my recent emails, this is to provide all of you and in particular our incoming First Year students in Food Science and Nutritional Sciences, with additional information so that you can plan for the coming semester. Our aim is to ensure that you have the best teaching & learning experience possible given the extreme circumstances we are operating in.

In the table below you will find a link to your draft S1 timetableThe usual student timetable website has been disabled for this academic year, as per the notification on the timetables webpage.

In your timetable, you will see that some sessions have allocated room numbers on campus, some are labelled as blended and some are online. Blended modules will run in person and online. Online sessions will be through Canvas and MS Teams, which is part of the Office 365 suite, free to all students at UCC. Therefore, for your online sessions, this is an indicative timetable and you will receive a detailed schedule of each module, including lectures and tutorials from your module co-ordinator through Canvas, so that you can build your own personal week-by-week schedule. Your module co-ordinators will also send you details on how the module will be delivered and assessed, as you will have an increased number of continuous assessments throughout S1.

We are working on S2 at the moment and will let you know more as soon as possible. It is likely to be similar to S1, with a with a mixture of online and face-to-face teaching. We await release of centrally booked rooms to clarify the extent to which it might be possible to teach in person. As you are aware, most of the lecture rooms we are allocated are too small to facilitate social distancing to 1m, as per government guidelines, so it is very challenging.

To prepare from a technological point of view for this very different looking academic year, please check out the information from IT services at https://www.ucc.ie/en/sit/services/laptops/. Your laptop will need to have Office 365 & Canvas plus potentially additional software such as SPSS/ endnote + others, as advised by your lecturers. If you are intending to buy new technology, we would recommend you choose a laptop to minimise limitations on software. You will require access to broadband in your accommodation.

The UCC student FAQ link is at https://www.ucc.ie/en/emt/covid19/student-faq/.

Please keep an eye on social media for updates from Food & Nutritional Sciences on Instagram [@uccfoodnutrition].

Your Programme\Year co-ordinator will organise an MS Teams Q&A session in the coming weeks to answer any questions you have in person.

Please contact either myself or your year coordinator by email to disclose in confidence any pre-existing health conditions that would prevent you from attending campus during the coming semester.

With best wishes,

Mairead
