Mary Bergin to deliver a tin whistle workshop as part of the Sydney Regan Music Masterclass Online Series at University College Cork

The Department of Music is delighted to announce that Mary Bergin, one of the greatest ever exponents of Irish Traditional Music, will be giving a whistle workshop to UCC Music Students as part of the Sydney Regan Music Masterclass Online Series on 18 Friday 2020. There is immense excitement among the traditional music community in the Department of Music at University College Cork! 

Widely acclaimed as the greatest tin whistle player of all time, Mary was born into a very musical family and won many awards at Oireachtas and Fleadh Cheoil competitions at both junior and senior levels. Mary’s first solo album Feadóga Stáin (1979) is one of the most iconic and influential traditional music albums of all time, and was followed by the critically acclaimed Feadóga Stáin 2 in 1992.  In 1990, Mary, together with musicians Kathleen Loughnane and Dearbhaill Standún, formed the group Dordán, whose engaging combinations of traditional and baroque Music have received wide acclaim, receiving the National Entertainment Award for Traditional Music in 1993. 

Mary has toured extensively in Europe, the US, and in Australia, playing in concerts and festivals, and giving workshops and seminars. She has given masterclasses in many universities around the world. In 2000, she was awarded the Gradam TG4 Traditional Musician of the Year Award. 

Her thrilling and rhythmic whistle playing has iconic status within the traditional music community, and it is an honour for Music students at UCC to get this amazing opportunity to learn from one of the greats of Irish traditional music performance.
