Week of Light
Series of events as part of a worldwide celebration open to the public
The Physics and Astronomy Society in University College Cork are celebrating a Week of Light from Monday 23 February until Thursday 26 February. This is part of the Year of Light Festival happening all over the world. It is open to all members of the public. The International Year of Light focuses on light science and its applications. The aim of the festival is to recognise how light based technologies promote sustainability. The Astrophysics Group in University College Cork studies the entire electromagnetic spectrum, from radio waves through to gamma rays. UCC also has close ties to the Tyndall National Institute, one of the leading research centres in information and communication technology research and development. As part of the celebration, the society will be hosting many activities including talks, movie screenings, demonstrations, trivia nights, tours, and stargazing. The talks will be presented by staff members of University College Cork, including Dr Frank Peters, Dr Denise Gabuzda, Prof Paul Callanan, and Fr Tom Forde on ultrafast pulses, Quakers in Astronomy, the Clarke windows of the Honan Chapel and more. The opening of the celebration will take place on Monday 23 February in University College Cork Boole 4 with a talk delivered by Dr Frank Peters entitled “From Ancient Navigation to attosecond pulses – light leads the way”. In the evening, there will be a unique demonstration of remote sensing technology used to establish aerosol profiles over Southern Ireland. One of the main events on Monday night will be a guided stargazing, which is free to the public. Telescopes will be provided. Observers that night will be able to see Venus and Mars close together, while Jupiter will be visible to the East. The Society invites all members of the public to attend the week of festivities.
