Copyright law for digital teaching and learning
This workshop is part of the National Seminar Series organised by the National Forum for the Enhancement of Teaching and Learning in Higher Education.
Speakers: Dr Louise Crowley, Faculty of Law, University College Cork Mr Jason Miles-Campbell, Manager, JiscLegal, Glasgow Dr Eoin O'Dell, School of Law, Trinity College Dublin Dr Darius Whelan, Faculty of Law, University College Cork This workshop will review copyright law as it applies to digital teaching and learning, and will be of interest to academics, researchers, learning technologists and library staff. It will consider how teachers can be creative in their course design, while continuing to comply with copyright law. The workshop will relate mainly to assisting learners in the transition from conventional learning to blended learning or e-learning. In blended learning and e-learning, there is a heavy reliance on digital material (whether for teaching or assessment), and teachers need to be informed about the copyright issues which arise. In turn, teachers can inform their learners about copyright issues of relevance to the learners. Themes of the workshop will include the key elements of application of copyright law to digital media, moral rights of authors, and the relationship of copyright to patents and trademarks. Participants will also be introduced to innovative solutions such as Creative Commons licensing, Open Educational Resources and open source software. The practical relevance of copyright law to assessment tools such as blogs, wikis and online portfolios will be discussed. Learning Outcomes: At the end of this workshop, participants will be able to: Create learning materials (for blended and online modules) which comply with Irish copyright law Create assessment tools which comply with copyright law Use appropriate techniques to find material which may be used safely in learning materials Demonstrate awareness of developments such as Creative Commons, Open Educational Resources and open source software Communicate relevant requirements of copyright law to learners who take part in modules
