A French Revolution? Current Debates on Higher Education in France
Prof Grace Neville, Emeritus Professor, UCC and former Vice-President for Teaching & Learning, will talk about the current deep and wide-ranging reforms that are taking place in French HE.
Led by Genevieve Fioraso, the French minister of Higher Education and Research (HER), who conducted a major public consultation in 2012, the French HE system's current and proposed changes have a number of parallels with current issues in Irish HE: transition form 2nd level to 3rd; open access and MOOCs; the dialogue between science and society. Other developments under the current French reforming approach include: clustering and harmonisation of universities and research centres within regions; greater collegiality and democracy within universities in decision-making, including a greater role in same for students. The French reforms are broadly welcomed but not without their critics from left and right. Come along and take part in what's sure to be a lively discussion.
