The Vice-President for Teaching and Learning and The School of Languages, Literatures and Cultures Distinguished Speaker Series Mark Fitzpatrick : The Notion and the Novel of Adventure : Robert Louis Stevenson’s Critical Reception in France, 1888-1913 ORB 2.55 Monday 1 March 2010 at 5 pm Mark Fitzpatrick was born in Canberra and grew up in Cork. He holds a double first class honours degree in French and English from UCC. During his undergraduate studies at UCC, he was awarded a scholarship which allowed him to spend a year at the University of California, Berkeley, where he studied Film and Creative Writing. Since 2003, he has been working mainly in Paris, first in Brentano’s bookshop, as Head of the non-fiction section, and later at the Université de Paris III – Sorbonne Nouvelle. In 2009, Mark came second in France in the agrégation examination, the highest competitive examination in the French education system, having studied for this examination at the Institut du Monde Anglophone (Université de Paris III – Sorbonne Nouvelle) and at the Ecole Normale Supérieure. His master’s thesis is entitled : Robert Louis Stevenson, Joseph Conrad, et la critique française du roman d’aventure en anglais. He is currently teaching at l’Ecole Massillon, Paris.
