UCC Climate Lab 2017 Seminar Series

UCC Climate Lab Seminar Series presentation by Dr. Swenja Surminski - Flood insurance fit for the future?

Increased flood risk, due to climate change and socio-economic trends such as changing land-use practices, is a major challenge for Ireland. This is putting pressure on existing strategies – including flood insurance – to cope with floods and reduce their impacts. This talk provides suggestions to inform the current debate about flood insurance in Ireland, based on exploration of how it could be reformed to be fit for the future in the context of climate change. The work presented is part of the ‘Costing climate change impacts and adaptation in Ireland’ research project conducted jointly by the Grantham Research Institute on Climate Change and the Environment and the Environmental Research Institute, UCC and funded by the Environmental Protection Agency. Dr Swenja Surminski is a Senior Research Fellow at the Grantham Research Institute on Climate Change and the Environment, part of the London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE), as well as a member of the Centre for Climate Change Economics and Policy (CCCEP). This is a free event open to the public organized by UCC Climate Lab at the Environmental Research Institute, UCC. All are welcome. Please register at
