Science Week@ the College of SEFS
Science Week and Discovery Science Festival @UCCThe College of Science, Engineering and Food Science (SEFS), UCC, will celebrate National Science Week, which takes place from November 13th to 20th, by hosting a series of events on campus throughout the week. The aim of Science Week is to promote the relevance of science, engineering and technology in our everyday lives and to demonstrate the importance of these disciplines to the future development of Irish society and to the economy. The College of SEFS has invited primary and secondary school students from across Cork city and county into the Eureka Centre for Inquiry Based Education in Science and Mathematics, UCC, to participate in many exciting and interactive events during Science Week. Senior infants and first class students will have the opportunity to experience the excitement of science with the interactive show “Step into Science”, while second, third and fourth class students will don their lab coats for the dramatic and interactive “Captivating Chemistry” workshops! Older students will be challenged with a series of mathematical puzzles in the interactive “mathamagical” show “It doesn’t add up”. A series of interactive workshops and demonstrations have also been developed for junior and senior cycle secondary school students, including “Water and the forces of nature” and “OpticMystic”, a fun optics workshop that will be delivered by the Cork Chapter of the Optical Society of America. Furthermore, a number of weekend courses for teachers on the topic of delivering practical science classes to secondary school students will also be delivered in the Eureka Centre. The College of Science, Engineering and Food Science, in conjunction with the Eureka Centre for Inquiry Based Education in Science and Mathematics, the Alimentary Pharmabiotic Centre and the Tyndall National Institute will also have interactive exhibitions at the Cork Science Festival “Discovery”, which will take place in the City Hall from Saturday 12th to Tuesday 15th of November (http://www.corkcity.ie/discovery/). Family days will be held on the Saturday and Sunday from 2pm to 6pm if you feel like coming along to join in the fun!
