A talk by Áine Hyland UCC Emeritus Professor of Education, UCC, as part of Cork Lifelong Learning Festival 2019.“Education for All? The Legacy of Free Post-Primary Education in Ireland” a talk by Professor Áine Hyland as part of Cork Lifelong Learning Festival 2019. 9 April @ 1pm in Nano Nagle Place. Free + no booking required. Free second-level education was introduced in Ireland 50 years ago. In the early 1960s, more than 50% of pupils left school before the age of 15 with no second level qualification. Today, Ireland has one of the highest proportion of pupils in the EU completing second level and progressing to higher education. But while the gap has narrowed considerably, there is still a participation gap between young people from less advantaged backgrounds and their more advantaged peers. Bridging this gap will be a challenge for us in the years ahead to ensure that we cherish all the children of the nation equally.
