R: The tidyverse and beyond

R is a free software environment for statistical computing and graphics. This lecture will introduce the accessibility, capability and applications of R software and highlight why R is worth learning, regardless of discipline.

Background: A skills gap has emerged between the increasing amounts of data available for analysis (together with the multitude of formats in which it comes) and our ability as researchers to process it. R is a free software environment for statistical computing and graphics. This lecture will introduce the accessibility, capability and applications of R software and highlight why R is worth learning, regardless of discipline. The talk will also act as an expression of interest for a free workshop series scheduled to run from October through to the end of November. Workshop Overview: This series will introduce R through the tidyverse collection of R packages. The core theme will be re-organisation of “messy” data into a “tidy” format. Development of the tidyverse is a significant step forward from the base R language where code is easier to write, read and run.
