An evening of genealogical interest will be held at The Lecture Theatre, Geography Building on Monday, August 17, from 4pm to 8pm, which will be of interest to the whole UCC community. The genealogy programme is now well established at UCC, with our two-year Diploma in Genealogy now recruiting its fourth successive annual intake of evening students. The proceedings will get underway at 4.30pm, with the first of two talks from Craig L. Foster, entitled ‘Using Naming Patterns to Find Your Ancestors’. Craig will speak later in the evening on ‘Brideprice, Handfasting and Merry Wives: How Understanding Marriage Patterns and Traditions Can Help Family History’. Between Craig’s talks, at 5.30pm, Eric W. Ryan, Distiller with Pernod-Ricard Irish Distillers and the Irish Whiskey Academy will speak on ‘Whiskey Families – A Rich History in Cork’. This illustrated presentation will contain much historical information on all the Cork distilleries (including the distilleries that formed Cork Distilleries Company and also Glen, Walkers, Millfield, Riverstown, Hacketts and so forth.) This event is open to the general public, and all are welcome.
