PJ Smyth currently holds an emeritus position in the department of Physical Education & Sport Sciences at the University of Limerick. At Limerick, PJ has been a lecturer and researcher in Motor Learning and Applied Sport Psychology. His work has included i the development of modules in motor learning and development and the putting in place of a motor skills laborator y. PJ’s research interests include practice factors affecting the learning and performance of sport skills, the development of fundamental motor skills in children and the relationship between fundamental skills and sport specific skills. P.J. has supervised both Masters and PhD research in the areas of typical and atypical fundamental movement skill development. In addition to his academic work PJ has considerable experience in the teaching and coaching of sport skills. He is advisor on skill development and mental preparation to a number performers and coaches at both elite and non-professional levels in a variety of sports. PJ grew up in Dublin and after school at CBC Monkstown, went to UCD where he obtained a BA and HDip Ed. He then went on to St Mary’s College Twickenham where he qualified as a physical education teacher. After three years teaching in Dublin he went on a Fulbright scholarship to Springfield College, Massachusetts w her he obtained an MEd in Physical Education. On returning to Ireland in 1974 he took up a lecturing position at the then National College of Physical Education in Limerick (subsequently to be Thomond College of Education which in turn became part of the University of Limerick). In the 1980s he obtained leave to go to the University of Southern California where he spent a number of years teaching and studying and obtained a PhD in motor learning.
