“Disability Arts and Culture: ‘Nothing about us without us'
Lecture by British playwright Kaite O'Reilly to mark UCC Disability Awareness Week
Art|Works is a collaborative initiative based in UCC’s College of Arts, Celtic Studies and Social Sciences designed to act as a hub linking Arts students, past, present and future, with academic stakeholders, employers, industry practitioners, and interested members of the wider public. Its core mission is to highlight to students, employers and the public the value and applicability of Arts degree skills in a vast array of sectors, as well as providing opportunities for students to engage with practitioners from across what are broadly known as the Creative Industries. This spring Art|Works is offering a series of events with playwright and dramaturg Kaite O’Reilly whose play In Water I’m Weightless, a commission of the Cultural Olympiad and London 2012 Festival, was shortlisted for the inaugural International James Tait Black Prize for drama. The play, which looks at the human body and issues of impairment, consists of texts performed by a cast of six Deaf and Disabled performers, subverting perceptions of disability and challenging the prejudices of the wider community in a humorous and at times poignant way. Kaite O’Reilly is coming to UCC to coincide with UCC’s Disability Awareness Week. Beginning with a writers’ workshop in Triskel on Saturday 22nd February, and continuing with a rehearsed reading of O’Reilly’s latest script, COSY, as well as 2 lectures in UCC on Representing Impairment in Drama & Theatre, and on Disability Arts and Culture, the intention of this three-day event is to offer UCC students, staff and members of the wider community the opportunity to engage with a successful practitioner from the field of theatre and with her work. The Monday evening lecture on disability arts and culture is open to everyone.
