Juvenile Justice in the U.S. - Current Trends and Challenges

Guest lecture by visiting Fulbright Scholar Professor Kim Thomas on the U.S. youth justice system, highlighting current trends and challenges.

A visiting Fulbright Scholar at the School of Law, UCC, Professor Kim Thomas will deliver a lecture to provide an understanding of the U.S. youth justice system and to highlight current trends and challenges within that system. The event will be of interest to anyone studying or working in the area of juvenile justice and there will be an informal reception after the talk. Professor Thomas has been teaching Juvenile Justice with Professor Ursula Kilkelly on the LLM Child and Family programme since September 2017, as well as conducting research on provisions of Ireland's Children Act 2001. At her home university, University of Michigan, Professor Thomas's research, teaching and practice concentrate on criminal law and procedure, especially on sentencing law and practice, juvenile justice, parole and post-conviction, and indigent persons accused of crimes. She is the cofounder of the Juvenile Justice Clinic at the university. In 2013 Professor Thomas was among several attorneys honoured with the Justice For All Award from the Criminal Defense Attorneys of Michigan for their training and pro bono support following the 2012 U.S. Supreme Court Miller v Alabama decision holding that mandatory juvenile life-without-parole sentences were unconstitutional. Prior to joining the Law School faculty in 2003, Professor Thomas served as a major trials attorney with Defender Association of Philadelphia. She is a magna cum laude graduate of the University of Maryland and Harvard Law School, where she was editor-in-chief of the Civil Rights-Civil Liberties Law Review
