Tuscan Estate Ltd.: Real Estate & the Propagation of the Tuscan Myth

Italian Department Research Seminar by Prof. Giulio Giovannoni, Dept of Architecture, Universita' di Firenze

The phrase "Tuscan villa" immediately evokes the estates of the Chianti or the Val d'Orcia. Yet Tuscan villas exist in South Africa and in California, in Florida and in Canada. But does a Tuscan architectural style really exist? Or is it just the mirrored image of a platonic idea? And how did this abstract idea develop historically and socially? This seminar investigates the construction of a Tuscan myth through architecture, in Tuscany and in the World; and explores the nuanced relationship between the original and the copy, the real and the hyperreal.
