The Psychology of Health Self-Care

The next in our series of SoAP Lightning Talks takes place next Wednesday at 6pm. The Psychology of Health Self-Care. Presentations are followed by a discussion led by a discussant.

Changing access or changing minds? Influences on cervical cancer screening attendance in Ireland Marie Kotzur School of Applied Psychology, UCC In 2008 the HSE commenced CervicalCheck, offering free smear tests to women aged 25 to 60 years, to prevent the development of cervical cancer, a debilitating disease. It appears that access to cervical cancer prevention has thus been resolved in Ireland; yet in 2013 the programme’s coverage lagged behind its 80% target.

This presentation discusses what can be done to improve attendance rates: if women are able to access cervical screening, psychosocial factors may inhibit attendance. Irish research suggests that positive attitude or attendance planning may improve screening attendance. The international literature has provided some interesting contexts in which to consider these findings. “Do not cross when orange: Risk and Safety in Food Allergy” Katarzyna Pyrz School of Applied Psychology Humans have inescapable yet complex relationship with food: from epicurean enjoyment of meals in a good company, to food rejection and avoidance as observed in various eating disorders. In food allergy, otherwise harmless food may kill if the disease is mismanaged.

In this talk I will explore the in-between ‘orange’ state of constant vigilance and alert unavoidable for people with food allergies. The daily negotiations across the risk-safety axis are mitigated through many biopsychosocial factors. My study is a part of a larger research project and seeks to understand the above determinants of the allergic reactions to food in the community Dr Audrey Dunn Galvin discussant.
