‘“Something of the Nature of a Massacre”: The Bandon Valley Killings Revisited’
John Borgonovo and Andy Bielnberg of School of History UCC will be discussing their new research into the so-called Bandon Valley massacre of April 1922
The so-called ‘Bandon Valley Massacre’ of April 1922 remains hotly debated among historians far beyond West Cork. Were these killings of Protestant civilians by the I.R.A. sectarian in nature? What do the events in the Bandon Valley tell us about the Irish Revolution? These questions and others continue to generate intense public and scholarly interest. This week, the Irish Studies journal Éire Ireland released an important article on the subject by University College Cork historians Dr Andy Bielenberg and Dr John Borgonovo.
Using new interpretations and previously unknown evidence, the article makes a major intervention in this compelling debate. On Thursday, 4 December, John Borgonovo and Andy Bielenberg will give a public lecture, ‘“Something of the Nature of a Massacre”: The Bandon Valley Killings Revisited’. The talk will be held at 6 pm in lecture hall G-19, in the Kane Building on the UCC Main Campus. A question and answer session will follow. All are welcome.
