"You Can Only Have One Mammy": Translating Brendan O'Carroll'
Gaja Cenciarelli, the Italian translator of Brendan O’Carroll, in conversation with Cork writer William Wall on translating the Agnes Browne novels.
The Agnes Browne novels by Irish comedian Brendan O'Carroll have enjoyed considerable success in Italy. In an informal conversation with Cork writer William Wall, O'Carroll's Italian translator, Gaja Cenciarelli, who has also translated Edith Wharton and Will Self, in addition to being a published novelist herself ('Sangue del suo sangue', 2011), talks about the challenges of the translation and the appeal of the Mrs Browne novels to an Italian audience.
